How to cut boxster keys?
I'm just wondering if you can order ready cut keys using the VIN#? I heard chrysler does it.
|
The dealer can order ready cut keys. Anyone can read a VIN# through a windshield, so I would expect a higher standard of proof of ownership before the dealer would deliver a key to you.
They will probably require you to drive/tow the car to the dealership, or otherwise prove you have possesion/title to the car. |
I ordered a ready cut key a few years ago using my VIN. But the key will not start the car without a key head that has the chip in in. To program the head you need the PST2 and a key learning code from Porsche. They also need your car to do this.
So, no one is going to steal your car with the VIN unless it has already been stolen. |
Can you re-cut existing keys? This key looks weird too
|
No. That key on ebay is for a car that does not have the remote option. The round button is for a light in the key head. The key on ebay is worthless to another Boxster owner.
|
I think this key is to put on the cafe table next to your cell-phone.
For some folks it's the appearance that counts! |
I just ordered another key for our Boxster. The dealer required us to bring the car up to get the key and needs a copy of the car's title. The address on the title has to match the drivers license.

My dealer didn't give me a hard time, I didn't have to show anything. Matbe because I had already spent over $2k fixing the car there.
