I think I found my next car !

I can't believe you can pick up an 911 Turbo for under $60k :

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/searchresults.jsp?num_records=&search_type=both&di stance=25&address=60195&style_flag=1&make=POR&mode l=911TURBO&make2=&start_year=1999&end_year=2007&mi n_price=0&max_price=60000&transmission=&engine=&dr ive=&doors=&fuel=&max_mileage=&color=&keywords_dis play=&sort_type=priceDESC&body_code=0&certified=&a dvanced=&default_sort=priceDESC&keywordsrep=&keywo rdsfyc=

Let's see, trade in the Boxster, the Benz, and the Harley :D

( I think I will still need another $20k )

It doesn't get any better than that

Bavarian Motorist 02-22-2007 05:43 PM

If only the cab. was that cheap...

MNBoxster 02-22-2007 05:47 PM

Hi,

Something's askew here when the '02 Carrera 2 listed just below it, from the same Dealer, w/ 12k more mi. is just $2k less than the '02 Turbo. That Turbo must have an accident history or something to be priced in the range of a Carrera 2...

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

Nick, make a tight deal, sell the Box outright to maximize your profit and finance in the neighborhood of $33k. That's like Mustang GT money. Easy.

You know how it is... you "mentally" get in the market for a new car, and then it's just innocent browsing..

Which leads to thinking of ways you can get the car...

And then eventually you end up w/ it one way or another and the whole cycle starts over.

Happens to me anyhow, lol.

On the other hand...
1. Better to get it now. Much harder to justify an expensive toy after the kids come. :)
2. Turbo/GT3 engines are much more reliable/robust than the M96 engine -- so less potential worries. :D

Funny thing. I was just looking at 911 Turbos on AutoTrader yesterday myself and noticing how many nice ones are below $60k. I even think I saw a couple CPOed in the mid $60k area.

I dunno. More power is always nice, but my toy car has to be a convertible and the Turbo converts don't look too appealing -- prefer the Boxster look much more. Add to that the mid-engine advantages, and we may have a wash here. Or until the next visit of the rascally power devil in my head...

Z.

I've read that the brain is incapable of recognizing the difference between fantasy and reality. If you simply daydream about an accomplishment or acquisition, the brain begins to plan strategy to make it happen. Daydream enough and the brain's effort increases exponentially. With a little stimulation, the brain will work on achieving your goal 24/7 until it comes to fruition.

..hopefully Nick's divorce attorney's brain will be working overtime as well when he shows up with that Turbo...

Bavarian Motorist 02-22-2007 07:02 PM

IDEA!

Instead of selling everything and losing 30k still for the turbo,

3.6l or 3.8l engine swap from roock motor sports!!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone on here said they did it for just 13k total including labor.

Not bad at all, all things considered!!!!!!!

You keep the convertibleness, you keep the Boxsterness, and most importantly, you keep the money-ness.

NickCats 02-22-2007 08:31 PM

You guys are the best !

Bavarian Motorist,

Turbo Cabriolet is gonna run $80k - $140k

If my Boxster implodes, engine swap will be first on the list.

unklekraker,

My buddy and I are always emailing each other cars all day at work - my wife said I am not allowed to talk to him anymore :p

z12358,

I'm got that rascally power devil in my head too :D

Griz,

If a divorce attorney get's involved after 3 months of marriage, I'll be driving a Yugo cause she will take half of everything. Never get a southern woman mad !

I promised my wife before we got married no more cars for 4 more years. In the last 3 years since we met I have had 5 cars and 2 Harley's. I bought a new Harley in 2005, and last year I traded in my 2004 Jag for the Box and bought the Benz.

New plan - brand new 2010 Boxster for my 40th birthday...

Nick

I remember when i was so into trucks and muscle car...Auto Trader and Diablo magazine are like my own personal Bible..I carry it everywhere with me, reading new issue cover to cover and then one time we went camping with my friend and my wife brought all the magazines that's been in the garage and behind the seats and throw it all in the campfire...whew, thank God for internet, no more magazine to read and for her to burn not unless she's bringing the keyboard and the mouse with her...hehehehehehehe! :D

djomlas 02-22-2007 09:03 PM

You mean soon I will be fighting space pirates with a crew of huge breasted blond commando vixens? Sweet!!!!!!!!!!

Perfectlap 02-23-2007 06:50 AM

Yes the Porsches are not holding value like they used to.
I wonder if it has to do with lower maintenance costs making the
car more accessible to a larger pool of buyers.
The appealing thing to me about the Turbo is the use of the
a true dry sump engine. Unlike the non-GT 911's, the Turbo uses
the GT1 engine block used in racing.
So imho its a much better value than C4 or C2.
If you can get a Turbo with an extended warranty you have the best of both worlds: a true exotic under $70K with a guarantee.

I was on a BMW board last night and a guy had a '99 911 listed for sale on the classifieds. He had not sold it and was getting feedback why.

Someone actually posted saying the Boxster had ruined the 911 value for you guys.

ARE YOU KIDING ME???

I still can't believe I let it go and didn't respond.

I wouldn't use "ruined" but the poster was right in the sense that the Boxster -- being a much better bang/$ proposition than the 911 -- uncovered how overpiced the 911 really have been all along.

For instance, today a new 295hp 3.4L mid-engine Box is still about $30k cheaper than an uglier 325hp (?) 3.6L rear-engine 911 convertible, with exactly the same interiors and quality of workmanship -- and that's simply ridiculous.

Z.

Brucelee 02-24-2007 07:28 AM

The real issue with a '99 911 in the resale market is twofold.

1-This generation of 911 is currently out of favor. Folks like the 993 for the purists and the 997 because it is simply a better car.

The 996 in the middle is now feeling the strain, price-wise.

The '99 986s are the worst values right now. These early models had many many quality issues and many buyers are simply adverse to that year.

Bavarian Motorist 02-24-2007 07:34 AM

The 911s should be getting an HP increase to about 380 for the S models and I'm not sure what for the regular models.

Desperately needed and desperately overdue.

I adore 911s. I wouldn't say they're ugly in any way, not even 996s.

I was refering to the convertibles. The coupes are fine.

Sweet Turbo

Look at this one. CPO and love the red accents on the interior, very reasonable price.

Perfectlap 02-26-2007 12:36 PM

The 996 prices are dropping but like other Porsches in the past the prices will Plateau into a range where its slightly out of reach for the average person. This is the advantage of owning a now much more reliable Porsche, for the right price it will attract a first time Porsche owner. Can't really say that about other more exclusive brands because the costs of fixing their high mileage models scares off 1st time buyers who can't afford a new version. That 1st Time Porsche buyer then becomes the guy Who buys a second and third Porsche.

as time passes you'll see certain well maintained and low mileage 996's start to gain value. I think the 2002-2004 996 will best fill this resurgence. The Turbos and GT3/2 at the sharp end, kinda like the more popular 928's.
If Porsche sticks with the round head lights on the 911's, the fried egg and Turbo head light Porsches could become historical as an icon of when Porsche went from nearly bankrupt boutique to profitable VW-partner, as well as having a different look from all the other VW looking 911's of the last 50 years.

With only 7500 miles on the clock, I say that is an attractive buy. I was looking at a new Cayman S in the mall yesterday while waiting for the wife to try on pregnant people clothes. I think the sticker price on the new Cayman is about the same as the buy-it now price on this 911 turbo. Hmmm, if I were in the market for another car, I would probably have to bid on this turbo…

Perfectlap 02-26-2007 12:48 PM

If you think that 7K miler is a good deal, wait another year and watch how much a better deal it will become. That's the beauty of these cars, they are rarely driven daily, even rarer on the track...all while the value drops and drops and drops.
Yet they are still maybe the most reliable 911s ever made(true dry sump).
It pays do some research on Rennlist, there seem to be some more coveted 996 Turbo years.

boggtown 02-26-2007 01:01 PM

Tell us the coveted years, lol. All I know of is the x50 option, and the turbo S, which might be the same thing, im no expert.
