Cost effective HID and deambering?
 

Hello everyone, I just picked up an '02S last week and I'm making a spreadsheet of all my planned upgrades and the costs and could use some advice. While I try to avoid ever cheaping out on stuff there are some mods that can be accomplished for less cost and divert those funds to another project.

I have a question on modifying the headlights that I just want to check if I understand them correctly. I'm looking to see if I can get clear HID's for less than the $1600 for the standard Litronics.

Here is what I'm thinking.

Take my stock headlights and change to this clear triangle. $50
Clear Triangles

Pull out the amber filter. Free
Mike Focke's How to


Buy the HID retro fit kit. $369
HID retro fit

Is this possible or am I overlooking something? As to removing the amber filter in past vehicles the lights simply use tabs and silicone and I've baked them to soften the sealant, open them and remove the filter. I plan to pull my headlights this weekend to try, but searching here I did not see anything on baking them. Is this possible with these lights?

Taking the amber out is only for the clear headlights in which case you wouldn't have to buy clear triangles anyway. The amber headlights can't be cleared out because the amber is part of the exterior lens.

Dude, you got a Porsche... there's not much you'll find you can do to it that is 'cost effective'.

I think suncoast has these for a lot less than $1600, I think around $1300 new. You can also buy them from ebay for around $900-1000 used. As for the amber removal, like Porschekid said, its for clear headlights only, sounds like you have the older ones so that doesn't sound like an option. I've heard that the conversion kit you are referring to blinds oncoming traffic as the standard casing is not designed for HID lights.

see how they both have orange, but one had little orange reflector inside, while the other one has completely orange housing

Yeah I have the old style which is a part of the headlight unit then. Oh well I guess full Litronics it is. :ah:

The Litronics are pretty sweet... I lucked out and got a set of full clear Litronics in my car... If you get them, get the wiring harness that works with the levelling system...

I finally had opportunity to use the high beams on some back country roads Saturday night. It's neat watching the low beams angle up to join the high beams... then drop back down when you switch back to the lows.

I do need to see about getting some whiter bulbs for the fogs, tho.

These are not Litronics but he says they are available. I am curious about these but the price seems to good to be true??

Yep... that's in British Pounds... and isn't that a 1:1.60 exchange rate right now??

That's pretty close on the exchange rate for a euro, but those pounds are around 1 to 1.9 now :eek: but the shipping is what will kill you.

If you look at the auction it is around $1265 dollars for the set and he does not charge shipping, even to the states.

Agreed, it might be a good deal as a package.

look closer, he charges 40 GBP to ship to USA.

40GBP = $78.00 (as of today)

But still not that bad of a deal, I just noticed he is including the corners and side markers.
