Has anyone attempted to replace the door speakers? or is it too much trouble to remove the door panels, you know stuff breaking etc.

Thx
Jeff

The doors panels are a breeze to take on and off, even the speakers can be taken out in a couple of seconds once you have the panel loose. It's just hard to find a quality 5.25" midbass,Focal makes a couple though.

It's easy to pull the panel

but the problem is finding a pair of 5.25" speakers that will fit into the "tuned port" and sound as good using the stock AMP (40W). Most people, myself included, who are truly looking for better sound, upgrade to 6.5 or 6.75" and create a custom baffle to mount them. I tried 3 different sets of 5.25"s and none were better than stock (2 were actually worse). The door panel removal itself is not hard, you just need to know where all clips, screws and misc fasteners are located. Here's a link to upgrading the Boxsters sound system which has instructions on door panel removal - starting at the bottom of page 4.

Good luck!

If you are really looking to making the stereo decent you should start with the head unit, preferrably something with a 24bit DA converter and real equalizers to tune to your listening taste.

As far as audio upgrades, keep in mind "crap in, crap out." A good head unit goes a long way toward making good sound, and a real amp will do wonders. The factory amp is horribly underpowered and just needs to go. Once you get to speakers, its not too difficult to do some work to get 6 1/2s in there, and most just make the cavity sealed in the process.
