Okay... is this a good deal?
I made an offer to a guy with a red 01 $500 less than he was asking. He didn't seem too interested. So I told him I was going to shop more...
I found these two cars locally: 2000 Speed Yellow Boxster S. 37kmiles. I talked the guy down to $26k from $28. and a... 2001 Black Boxster S 34kmiles... same price. $26k down from $28k Do either of these (pending ppi) sound like a reasonable deal? They both carfaxed out okay... lease cars with low miles per year etc... no indication of wrecks etc. I did not see anything on the carfax that said that the Ballance shaft seals were ever replaced (That could be good or bad) Anyway, what do you guys think? I'm ready to purchase as soon as I feel I have found the DEAL I'm looking for. Thanks. |
I like the sound of the 2001 Black S. Thats what I have.
Depending on options, ie full leather , xenons, wheels, psm or heated seats.. this may be a good deal. I have 34k miles on mine now and that is considered low for a 2001. I believe that the 2001 has a few features that the 2000 did not. Personally, I dont like yellow either. As long as it checks out, go for it. |
What features does you 01 have that are different?
As far as the standard equipment... they are pretty much the same. I do like the fact that the black one is newer. Although I have a black Audi as my daily and it's hard to keep clean. Thanks! |

Thanks for the info...
Your first point you made... "1. The Intermediate Shaft was changed to a Tooth-type chain from a roller-type. This required modifications to the crank, tensioners and sprockets - not considered a good move - this is where most of the IMS failures come from." it sounds like they took a step back on the 01 from the 00? Or am I just reading it wrong? Thanks. |
Just curious, what happened to the 02s with respect to the timing chain?

Porsche was concerned about vibration issues in the engine and also switching to an Oil (as opposed to electro-solenoid) activated VarioCam, so they changed the configuration of the IMS, was a double-bearing, switch to a single. Also, the timing chain profile was changes and the sprocket. It may have solved a vibration issue, but apparently at the cost of some reliability. IMS failure on the earlier cars is almost nonexistent, you could almost say rare. It is an issue on the later cars, not as prevelant as RMS failure, but it usually takes the engine out with it... [QUOTE=MNBoxster]Hi,
Differences between the '00 and '01: 5. 3-spoke Steering Wheel w/ colored crest replaced the 4-spoke of earlier years. Actually, the '00 model has the three spoke wheel. 9. Deck Lids switched from Front manual/Rear electric to both electric. On the "00, while the rear deck lid has an electric remote release from the key, the internal releases for both front and rear are mechanical. |

To the original poster, both sound like good prices if they turn out to be good cars. But that's heavily dependent on region. It's up to you to decide if it's a good deal. |
