Just ordered GT3 seats

Well I finally pulled the trigger and order some GT3 seats. They should be arriving Friday this week. I have a car show I will be attending in Portland, OR next weekend and thought the seats would be a good addition. I wanted the seats for autocrossing, but used the show as a justification to get them now. :)

Now I just need to get some harnesses for them. Luckily there are many places around here that sell them.

From what I have learned this week, Oprah won't be comfortable in your new seats! :)

David_J 02-06-2007 02:35 PM

I probably won't be comfortable either, but it will force me to lose the weight I've gained over the past year. :)

I have driven my friends 996 with GT3 seats and they seemed to be fine, but that was also about 10 lbs ago.

Weight loss program, here I come.

Yeah the holidays snuck up on me and I coud see the extra 5-7 pounds every time I fastened the seat belt. REPULSIVE.
In a momment of desperation (too cold to get the Bianchi out) i ordered one of those ab chairs from home shopping network. LOL But the ability to stetch out my back on that thing after sitting in that GT3 seat is addictive! I have a congenital back defect (tail bone fused to 1st v.) Beats Roman chair sit ups by a mile.

anyhoo, I'm Assuming you ordered black seats. I saw a guy on Rennlist with a really nice set of Simpson belts in Silver(1-800-654-7223). I think they are cheaper than the Schroths (which Porsche rebadges as their own).) The Simpsons are the Platnium series cam lock 6 pt. harnesses with 3" lap belts and 2" sub belts. Make sure to get the "pull up" and not pull down. Hard to adjust the pull downs.

In the meantime you can use the CG-Lock for Autocross. They have a great installation guide on the site.
http://www.cg-lock.com/

from a driving point of view my Toyo RA1's and those seats were the best mod to date. You'll have to get used to sitting lower, you'll drop a couple of inches.

p.s.
You'll need a set of reverse torx sockets to fasten it to the floor. that delayed my installation as I waited the bits to come from mail order, ebay if I remember.

what kinda loss do u experience when u wanna sell the? just curious

David_J 02-06-2007 09:39 PM

The seats are black leather. I will be recovering the inserts with a grey suede to match the grey interior I currrently have. I don't think that will get done before the car show I have next week.

It would depend on the buyer. If someone wanted GT3 seats, then I couldn't see that impacting the price at all. If I sell the car, the GT3 seats would probably just come out. My stock seats are full power with memory and heated. To most buyers, those would be a better choice.

I have the same condition. I have a hard time being comfortable in any seat. I figure the GT3 seat couldn't cause me that much more pain.

Hey David,

What show are you going to in PDX?

- C

David_J 02-07-2007 07:05 AM

It's the Portland Rod & Custom Show. My father-in-law is putting his 35 Ford in it too. I saw that they have a sports car catergory so I thought I would go too.

It should be a lot of fun.

So I waited all day for UPS to show up. Their website said they were out for delivery. 7pm comes and I finally get an email saying they were damaged in shipping.

Now it's the weekend and I have no seats. I have to have my car loaded in the trailer on Wed night to get it to the show on Thursday. I hope that UPS can get this resolved ASAP as I really wanted the seats for the show.

boggtown 02-09-2007 07:35 PM

Hey, at least you get to complain about your seats getting damaged, lol. I got none :(
Hope it works out.

djomlas 02-09-2007 07:45 PM

as nice as those seats look, i just wouldnt be able to justify spending that much money into seats...

You trailer the boxster? lol..... you're kidding right?

David_J 02-09-2007 08:01 PM

I trailer it to the autocross events. I get it ready the night before with my race tires on and everything out of it. Makes it nice when you get to the event and have nothing to get ready.

Next weekend is a car show in Portland, OR. It's a 3 hour drive. I am working on getting the car all detailed up and don't want all my effort to go to waste due to all the rain.

I do drive the Boxster almost every day. The only time it stays in the garage is in the snow, or when I have it torn apart to work on it. I beleive if you have a car, you should drive it.

Here's a pic of the trailer

Aww, I see. I didn't catch the auto-x thing at first. That is understandable. I saw "car show" and I was scratching my head! If some guy drove in a car show trailering a boxster that would be a different story.

ddb 02-10-2007 02:35 AM

Nice trailer and tow vehicle!

David_J 02-13-2007 01:52 PM

My seats finally arrived this morning. They had to ship out a new pair yesterday since the first set was sent back after being damaged by UPS. I'm hoping to get them installed tonight and will post pics when I'm done.

David,

Those seats look awesome !

Not too sure about the seatbelts, though...

Is that the only option with the GT3 seats ?

I'm sure they are great for the track, but the look like they would be a pain in the a$$ for daily driving.

Nick

Sorry to bring up an older thread but those seats look amazing! Are they a direct fit into the 986 or were custom seat sliders required?

Those belts are only used for autocross. They are not in the way when I'm driving on the street. The back parts sit behind the seats, and the lap belts unclip. I use the stock belts for street driving.

They are a direct fit. No additional brackets needed. I just unboxed them and bolted them right in.

David, the seats look fantastic. Love the bi-color theme you have going. Let us know how comfortable they are for rides 30mins and longer.

blueillusion97 06-20-2007 09:43 PM

Thats nice...im wondering as well how comfortable are they?

pteam 06-20-2007 09:53 PM

David how much does that car trailer cost?

Also since you dont plan on selling your boxster soon you could sell your old seats kinda cheap, put that money in a money market or mutal fund making 5-10-15% a year and make some good money if you would have just kept those seats in your basement for 2-3 years

j.fro 06-21-2007 01:56 AM

Those seats look great! Would you mind answering a couple of questions?
1) Did you need to unhook the seatbelts, and if you did, how did you keep the airbag light off?
2) Any idea on the weight savings over the stockers?
3) Cloth vs leather: during auto-X, do you get any sliding around on the leather?
Thanks

The seats are way more comfortable than the stock seats. Since I just traded the Boxster in, I put the stock seats back in. My back was killing me sitting in those. The GT3 seats are harder to get in and out of, but way more comfortable.

I don't remember the exact cost, but it was a little over $10k.

I'm glad I didn't sell the old seats. I just put them back in the other night so I could trade it in. :)

You reuse all the stock seatbelt parts. No airbag light at all. Just unbolt the parts from the stock seats and bolt them to the new seats. The harnesses for just for racing. With the harnesses on, I never had any issues with sliding around on the track. You are strapped in and can't move. Was nice to not have to worry about trying to keep your body from moving. Made it so you just had to concentrate on driving.
