speedometer issue/alignment

I was thinking that it could be due to cold weather here in California...I drive a 2001 Boxster and I was wondering why my speedometer seems to not light up when driving, meaning some of the lights don't show my actual speed, they are cutting out. For example, if I'm going 66 mph the digital readout is 11 mph. This has been happening on and off for two weeks now and I wanted to know if anyone had similar problems, and how much would it cost to fix it? Thanks! Also, since I'm posting, I think I need a wheel alignment, and I don't think it was ever done on this car...When I thought about buying a 2002 Boxster S with 5000 miles on it, the dealer ppl told me my car was in an accident. I'd like to say they were referring to "bottoming out" on the front end, which is not an accident per say...and I looked at the treadwear on my car and it seems consistent (meaning no showing of irregular wear, I think they were just trying to go for a lesser trade in value). My point on this is: since I will have to get tires with the wheel alignment (the tires are ready to be replaced), what do you all think about a recommended tire for my car? Much is always appreciated! And Thanks.
Bill

I can comment on the cold.
It was 14 degrees here this morning, and no problem with the digital display. Was it 13 in Cali? ;)
