CV Boot

I was just wondering how hard it is to replace the rear driver side outer CV boot on a 01 Boxster S. Do you need a special tool?

Hi,

Not impossible, but not easy either. You have to disassemble the wheel hub using a slide hammer to get it out. Then remove the outer CV joint so that the bellows will slide off the driveshaft. Consider changing them all at once, especially if you're DIYing it. Several special pliers are also need, circlip, etc.

Many here have done it. It's more tedious than anything with most of the work involving exposing the bellows for removal/installation. Hope this helps...

You have two options to get to the CV boot...

1. Pull it using the factory method which requires a special tool to dissasemble the rear suspension enough to be able to swing the rear wheel hub and carrier out of the way. Then you use a wheel hub puller to press the axle out, unbolt it from the differential, and it's out.

2. Do it the way I described in http://986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4961

You should definitely consider doing all four while you are at it.

Do a search in this forum for cv joint. You'll see a post where someone explained in awesome detail exactly how to do this. I posted a follow-up in that thread last summer pointing out a couple of things.

It's fairly easy to do as long as you are a diy type of person and have some mechanic skill. The biggest pain is probably putting the new boots on over the lips. You have to use two hands and a screwdriver and everything will be covered in axle grease (use rubber gloves).

Also, I highly suggest you do all 4 boots. The cv joints in the S model sit at a higher angle and put more pressure on the boot. All 4 of mine were torn when I did them.

I'd go into what is required, but I'd just be recreating the previous post. Oh, I mail ordered the repair kits for $25 a piece from Suncoast.
