best so cal road?
 

hi!

just wondering if there are any southern cal ppl that would like to share what road/path they've traveled that gave them a great 986 experience?

i'd like to have a couple that i can trip for a stress reliever. before, my trips were in a mini-van. so when i got the boxster, those mini-van roads were water off the ducks(986) back. i now know what it means for a car to 'beg for more'. ;)

although i'm not trying to encourage freeway porsche drag racing, include twisty content and/or 90+mph worthy %. let me also say 'drive safely'!! i only take advantage of this kind of thing if there's empty road. i've got a family, i don't drink and i am careful whenever i go out. i don't need a ticket either. i'm quite sure that rural owners have an abundance of this but us city kids may be at a loss.

so far after a few months of ownership, i can suggest 110 fwy north of downtown 4-level up to a 76 gas station. drive it late nite after 8pm. stay to the left lane as much as possible. there's a nice 40 mph turn that i've taken at about 70 mph.

The road that runs from Temecula to Palm Springs through the desert and high mountains is a trip. Lots of great views and wonderful twisties.

Be careful in the mountain passes as a mistake could easily be fatal.

I think the grapevine would be a great drive, either going up or going down. While you're at it, you can go all the way to San Francisco via the 5. As long as there's no traffic, it's a terrific drive. Even going to Vegas would be a great drive.

the "back way" into Big Bear on the 38
S7 through Palomar Mtn. Great twisties in the Mtns.
Angeles Crest Hwy on a weekday.
PCH from Malibu up to Oxnard.

My favorite when I lived in SD was the Ortega Hwy (74) from Mission Viejo out to Elsinor. Pecivil mentioned another - around Mt Palomar. And Ca 76 or 78 both were fun and connected to other twisties in the hills.

When I lived in SoCal I commuted between Palmdale and West LA, took the Angeles Crest each way and that my friend is a hell of a drive. Only problem was I did not own a Boxster at the time.

Though it's in NorCal, the 1 from Carmel to Morro Bay is the most challenging (and beautiful) road that I've ever driven.

I like the winding and twisting road called Palos Verdes Dr, its basically a road that runs along a cliff & Pacific Ocean and you can see catalina island.

Las Flores, off the PCH right after Big Rock. It is seriously twisty, hairpins and cut-backs and crazy inclines. Follow it as it turns into Pluma and it'll eventually hit Malibu Canyon Road (the return trip to the PCH is even better). DO NOT attempt this road at speed if your brakes are iffy, you will NOT get a second chance on some of the turns!

That route wont be opened until 2008 cause of landslide damage.

My personal favorite is to start at Mullholland/PCH and head inland on Mullholland all the way to Sierra Creek, and then up to Kanan to get on the 101 and head home. Great combination of straightaways, slow s turns, and hairpins, all with a great view going through Malibu Canyon. Plenty of good turn-outs to "unwhite" your knuckles and take a breather along the way. The whole trip from PCH to the 101 is about 19 miles. Click here for a map.

When did it totaly close down, I knew of 39, and some of the off-shoots but did not know the entire route was closed.

But then again it has been awhile since I had been on it :rolleyes:

You might want to try the 18 from San Berdoo to Crestline. It's in good shape and has 2 lanes in each directions...you shouldn't get caught behind a slow car. Once your up in Crestline, take the 138 down to the Cajon Pass (I-15). Might want to wait a couple of days as it looks like it might rain/snow.
