It would be interesting to see their sourcing. While I love my 99 with 77k miles, I don’t see it selling over about $8k at best. They don’t breach ten thousand on the auction sites I’ve seen, and frequently the ask is just over ten on FB Marketplace in the area, and I’m sure they aren’t getting that.

I keep getting notes from Car Fax and Carvana telling me that my 98' w/100,000 (non-S) is worth about $4,000....and I pretty much agree.

To me, it's worth much more, not in dollars but in enjoyment each summer.

85 data points over 5 years is statistically insignificant for the 986, I would suggest. Sales at collector auctions means little to nothing in the real world, unless you are interested in a collector grade Boxster.

The data is skewed because of the 2021 & 2022 values - note most of the data pts are above the ave line during those yrs. Those were COVID yrs when money was burning holes in pockets and car values appreciated. Throw those 2 yrs out and the ave line drops $2K. Today's values are prob still high as values settle back to reality.

Interesting data, but context is important. Certainly can't make any judgements w/o understanding what was going on. We may never see a period in time where all cars appreciate like they did from 20-22.

Are those auctions ones where a dealer has let the auction house sell to other dealers, if so may be skewed very low . Dealers keep the good ones and auction the ones that they can't sell.

There is a Cayman on a lot near me that has been there for months. Good cosmetically. Look at me paint job so I wonder about its accident history.

I think you have a good outlook. I bought my car to enjoy it and don't consider it an investment. For street driving at more or less legal speeds, my Boxster is fine.

There are other financial benefits to keeping an older Boxster. In Virginia, cities and counties tax personal property including cars. I was chatting with the owner of a new 911 Turbo S in a parking lot two weeks ago. (The camaraderie among Porsche owners is amazing.) He volunteered that his tax bill was $4000. For the past few years, my tax bill was a negligible amount. I don't recall exactly, but it was probably around $50. When we didn't receive a bill for the Boxster this year, my wife called the county tax office. They told her that our county doesn't tax vehicles that are 25 years old or older.

That said, the newer Porsches are amazing. In August, I participated in the Porsche track experience at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. The cars were newer 911 Turbo S's equipped with PDK's. When I drove my own base Boxster with a 5-speed at Virginia International Raceway a few months later, the difference in performance was night and day. I'm treating it as motivation to improve my driving skills.
