Front Oil Leak - Reman M96.23 Engine

Hey Folks,

I rebuilt the M96.23 Boxster 2004 engine (in Dealer) around 1 year now (10.000 km) and after a spirited driving yesterday i saw oil drops on the left side the next day. I removed the plastic panels underneath and took some photos.

1. Belt, Crank pulley and the area of pulleys is clean.
2. It seems its coming from the oil pump in the front of the engine. Not quite sure.
3. Both oil pumps are new.
4. I estimate the oil loss to be around 200ml but not sure if it all happened yesterday or has been happening for few days/weeks.

New AOS a month ago ( unfortunately Rosepassion sent me a !@$& aftermarket one) so i doubt it can be the aos.

Not sure where to start now and i dont want to get back to the dealer again...

THANKS as always..

Clean the area with the oil on them, top up your oil and add an oil compatible UV dye (Uview and others make it, can be found on Amazon), then run the car for a couple of hours. A black light source will then be able pinpoint the source of the leak.

That leak definitely does not appear to be new... Clean area thoroughly, take a picture of it spiffy. Fill it up and let it run (hopefully w dye) w minimal if any driving and diagnose from there.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the replies, I couldnt find dye easily in EU so I did the foot powder spray method and pinpointed the issue coming from behind the Engine mount. Maybe it’s the oil pump

Anyway, shouldn’t Porsche Dealer have some kind of warranty (at least for the assembly/labour part ) ? Only 9 months passed since the reman.

Did you ask them about warranty?

Lacostas 12-11-2025 10:09 AM

No i didnt ask for warranty but it should be 2 years. My Oil pump is new (the cover too) but the oil pump gaskets were elring (new). Is it possible that they are leaking after 10k kms ? Or porsche engineers f* this up

With all due respect… what are you doing asking a forum if you have a Porsche factory warranty on your engine?

Lacostas 12-14-2025 07:40 AM

Ill be checking with my indie if we can find the leak and then will consider getting it to the dealer to fix it.

Thanks for your respect brother - obviously im asking more than that (if you read the whole thread). Most probably you stopped reading on the "warranty" stuff. With all due respect why would you even reply if your contribution would be nada?

With all due respect... why would you have your "indie" diagnose the problem then take it to a dealer for a fix?

Asking for a friend.

lol, I read the thread about 6 times trying to wrap my head around #1 why you’d have a Porsche dealer rebuild your engine (what did that cost?), and #2, which I’m still wondering, is why you aren’t taking advantage of a factory warranty if you have it.

Do you live very far from the dealer, maybe?

Simply because I used to trust the dealer but now I don’t. Last time they did my oil change they overfilled with 1L (imagine that). The only way im going back there is for them to fix something they broke.

Let your friend know

I don’t trust the dealer now. Unfortunately they used to be good couple years ago but now the 25+ years (of experience) mechanic has been replaced by a 2 (years of experience) guy. By the way the leak is coming from the oil pump cover o ring.

Gilles 12-18-2025 12:25 PM

In the first picture, it seems that the chain tensioner is leaking? The o-ring should be easy to replace after locking the cams, am I right?

EDIT: Before yo do anything, you should clean properly the area to ensure the source of the oil leak (as suggested by JFP..)
