Ims separation
Hello all,
I was doing my timing chains and guides on my 2002 3.2L Boxster. Everything seemed to be going well till I went to install the oil pump/water manifold and my ims is not sitting centered in the bore. I was going to see if any one has seen this before? Is this a symptom of ims separation? I was going to tap it with a brass drift and hammer to se if it would straitened out. I will up load a picture shortly. My photo isn’t in the right format. |
Did you lock the engine at TDC and employ cam holding tools before starting work on the chains and guides? If not, the engine has jumped time due to the pressure exerted on the cams by the valve springs, causing the IMS shaft to move upwards and usually to the right.

Hello,
I did have the crank lock tool in but not the cam lock tool. I still have the plugs out and can see that the cams have not moved on either bank. I was trying to post pictures up but it appears they need to be hosted, which I don’t have the ability to do anymore. |
Do you have ALL the hydraulic tensioners out of the engine? The cams also do not have to move very much for this to happen....and "eyeballing" the cam positions questionable at best, they should have been locked down before you started.

A little more elaboration on what you did would help. If you save your picture in jpg format you can upload it.
You are saying you are doing chains. Which ones? Apparently you are replacing the chain rails which requires pulling off the oil pump housing, so you removed that already. But replacing corresponding long chains (from IMS to cams) requires splitting the cases, unless you split the chain itself. But then it doesn't matter what is happening at the heads because they should come off. So I'm confused. |
I loosened the cam sprocket fasteners for bank 2, after reinstalling the locking tool, and it pretty much fell back in to place.
Thank you for the help guys. |
