Opinions on a Short Shifter

Hello follow 986'ers. I have a 2001S with the 6 speed manual. I'm thinking of replacing the OEM shifter with a Short Shifter. I see that Rennline sells a system for a bout $375 on Pelican. They also sell lower priced models for under $200.

For those that have a short shifter, are you happy you made the change? Big difference going through the gears?

Any downsides to installing a SS system?

Thanks and happy driving

Doug

I installed a shifter from a 987/997 in my car. The shifts are noticeably smoother and shorter than I experienced with the stock 986 shifter. My research led me to conclude that the 987/997 shifter was better than the less expensive aftermarket shifters.

At the time, I thought a better option would be the Porsche short shift kit from a 987/997. Unfortunately, those were rare, and the available units were considerably more expensive than the stock 987/997 shifters. If I recall correctly, I bought my shifter from a guy who was upgrading to a Porsche short shifter, and I paid a reasonable amount.

I don't have hands-on experience with any of the other shifters.

I have a short shifter in my 2000 S. The car came with it so i know nothing else, but the shifts are excellent and quick. It is a little bit hard/stiff, specialy before the car is warm, but it is fine.

I installed one of Ben's ball bearing short shifters and really like it. Seems to make shifts quicker and more precise. In my opinion it's a worthwhile modification.

The exact shifter that I have doesn't appear to be available, but this looks like his current version - https://www.uniwerksdesign.com/product/bens-porsche-996-986-short-shifter/

I wish there were a short shift kit that had standard threading instead of the proprietary rectangle piece.

I installed a Ben's with the side lever upgrade. Everything now feels tighter, shorter and more precise. I would definitely recommend it.

I have a Numeric shifter and it's great. It's got three options for how short you want to go with it. I liked that it replaces the entire thing and isn't just a new stick you install in the same plastic base.
