DIY 986 Engine Removal Folks, What's the best jack to use?
 

Working on a longterm engine rejuvenation and have been looking for a cheap used engine and/or transmission jack when it comes time to reinstall the power parts and I'm curious of the opinions of what works well and what doesn't. Usually I see people using a hydraulic table lift but these are expensive and far between for used examples. So that led me to motorcycles jacks as they are always commonly available used and relatively cheap, sometimes as low as $50. They seem like they will work well but just curious if any of you good people have used these jacks for removal or installation of the M96 hunk of trouble?

I have spent a lot of time on this question. My deliberations were influenced by: 1) the fact that I already had a transmission jack before my first engine swap and 2) that I have Quickjack 3500s with a limited lift hieght. With the transmission jack and a low profile floor jack I am able to get the engine and transmission out as a unit. I looked at motorcycle jacks and it seemed to me that they would have caused clearance problems. If you are working with a lift or some other manner of lifting the car the motorcycle jack or hydraulic table might be the way to go.

I use a support bar above the engine compartment and a 1,500 lb ATV lift underneath. I place plywood and wood blocks on the ATV lift to support the engine without damaging the sump plate. I keep the car fairly low on jack stands while lowering and raising the engine and only have it high while moving the engine in or out from under the car.
Go slowly. Always expect that there is one wire or hose that you forgot to disconnect and find it before you cause damage.
