Caliper Paint
 

I want to paint my calipers yellow, I've seen the yellow g2 kits and the yellow looks really light, compared to yellow porsche brakes. Is there any other solution, can I paint the calipers with speed yellow and then add a high temp clear coat? Upon to any suggestion. My car will be going to an auto show in P.R. and I want the calipers to look good not aftermarket pepboys look. After all its a porsche.

The PCCB's yellow finish is a high temp paint which you can probably get from the dealer at a steep price no doubt. If you feel the aftermarket high temp yellow is too light try mixing it with the high temp red until you get the shade of yellow you think is right.

When painting my calipers red I discovered I had not cleaned the calipers well... they were filthy and the red paint got very dark with brake dust before I realized what I was doing.

Yellow will be even more noticeable, so do yourself a favor and use the whole can of brake parts cleaner and set of clean shop towels on your calipers to insure you've removed every bit of dirt, grime and brake dust from them before you start.

Like any painting project, it's the typical issue of prepping for 80 percent of the time and doing the actual work for the remaining 20 percent of the time.

Mixing the red into the yellow may make it orange. If they have black, you may want to put drops of black into it instead of red. On the other hand, it may need some red in it too to warm it up and move it to the reddish side of speed yellow. That's a hard one to judge.

A spray over of high temp clear coat will really make it last a long time, and keep your stickers (if you put PORSCHE) stickers on the calipers intact far longer. I did not do the clear coat because I was unwilling to keep my car up on jacks for another 24 hours after the calipers were painted. It was freaky enough to have it perched up there as long as it was.

here's a set of PCCB from an 05 Turbo Cab (buy it now on Ebay under $60K! 1500 miles) The cost of replacing the ceramic rotors is almost 20% of the cost of buying the car. :eek:

PL, how much was that car new??

PCCB on a 911 is $8,840.

I don't want to think about it or I will cry. Somebody is in a hurry to sell this car.
my only consolation is that its black. (never again)

The 3rd generation PCCB are almost $10K and 1000% better than the 1st gen.

PL, that car had to be close to $150K new!

The PCCB pricing is the current 2007 costs. I don't see $10K for that option.

I tell you what, if I had 57k in hand, I'd buy that turbo S cab waaaaay before I'd buy a new boxster! Geez, what on earth would I do with all that HP under my right foot? :dance:

That is one sports car bargain.
But even if they gave it to me for $30K and told me I couldn't sell it for four years I
would never buy a black car car I would spend all day drooling over and being totally pyshco about every little scratch, rock chip and swirl.
I could however spend $20K to have it repainted :D

that guy can drive the car for the next three years and sell it for only a few K less than he stole it for. Somebody is having a great holiday already!

There's no way that car would sell for $57k. There has to be some angle or scam. Things this good to be true rarely are. Bidder beware.

price does seem too low, but if it is true, then thats a bargain and a half

HMMMM back to the topic!!!! :D I painted mine last year. I decided against the brush on stuff for a number of reasons and ended up using Duplicolor high temp paint. Mine were red and not yellow, but the procedure should be the same. OH.. and believe it or not.. the color is.........are you ready.......... Ford engine red!! An exact match to Porsche caliper red. I don't know about yellow, but given the large selection of colors duplicolor has, I'm sure you could find something to match. Anyway.. be SURE you clean them first.. clean them twice or you'll be disappointed in the results. I used brake cleaner spray and it did a terrific job. The brand probably isn't important. Mask off everything, spray at least two and probably three coats of color, apply decals, then two or three (at least) coats of clear. After a year of normal driving, and two DE's mine still look new........ok.. except for a couple of chips I got when changing the brake pads for the DE's. BUT, if you're careful, even changing brake pads won't chip them. Here are a few pictures

i would add a bit of red paint to the yellow, to get it closer to the real gt3 colour. i have my calipers painted in yellow gt3 paint. it's not the right yellow.

Bob, thanks for your great post. Painting calipers is my next project. I"ll be sure to use your advice and photos for assistance if need be.

that seems like more work than using a brush on.
when i did mine...the masking part took about a minute er wheel, minimum amount of masking since you are using a brush and not worying about overspray.
heres my b4 and after, and i also put new lugnuts on as well as colored centercaps. no clearcoat either...night and day difference in overall appearance

Thanks for the info! Nice work guys on your calipers! I am thoroughly impressed that you (Bob) didn't have to take the assembly apart. It looks easier than I thought. Were you able to access the back without taking them off? Any pitfalls to spraying vs. brush work? With spraying, it didn't look like you had any paint runs? And for the brushwork, I couldn't see any brush marks?

i think that you will get good results with both.
at first i was afraid that you will be able to see brush marks, but there isnt any at all.
i put only 2 coats, i bet if you choose more you will get even better results.
i got the paint at autozone, its the caliper paint kit for like 15 bux, and i did 3 cars, so thats 4 calipers per car and i put 2 coats per caliper, and i still have most of the paint....i also think that if you get any chips, its easier to touch up the chip with a brush than to recoat the whole thing again with paint which means more masking and what not, and if the ship is visible trough the wheel, im sure you can even touch it up w/o taking the wheel off.
