Misfire + ticking

Hello all, car recently started throwing codes for a misfire on 4,5,6. did the reasonable thing and got em changed. However upon returning. I was headed somewhere and noticed it started flashing again, didn't get to see the code but my car was runnin weird, looked back and saw smoke + a noticeable tick. Does this sound like somethin to do with timing / tensioners or are we thinkin a new engine
