key battery
 

when i got my car the key wasnt opening the doors...changed the battery and put the key in ignition, turned all the way without turning the car on, took it out, pressed the button and worked fine. that was about a month ago. last week for soem reason it stopped again, was blinking and everythign but nothing was happening, and then today no light at all. bought a new battery and now it works again.
what would make the life of battery last only 1 month?
any thoughts?

i had the same problem in my 2003 audi a6. it seems there was a batch of defective keys which kept draining the batteries. check with a dealer or search for a tsb re:key defects.

The remote sensing in the car turns off after a couple of weeks to save battery life. You have to turn the ignition on to reactivate it. Maybe that's what you're experiencing?

its not that, my car gets driven EVERY day :)

I'll be doing a search on defective keys. That wouldn't be good.
btw Mine's never opened either trunk, although at times I do hear some faint clicking when I press the button.

How long should the battery last anyway?

I have found that the buttons on my FOB press against other items in my pocket and was causing a drain of the battery or if near my car has set off the alarm or unarmed it. I have started making sure that I take my keys out of my pocket while sitting for long periods (at work) and make sure I have nothing else in the same pocket.

I have kept the same battery for my Lexus for two years and it is a daily driver, with the Box my battery lasted about two months prior to me changing the way I kept the key in my pocket, since then I have had the same battery for about 8 months.

Changed battery and, althought the LED flashes, I can't get any of the buttons to do what they're supposed to!
Next step?

put the key in the ignition and turn all the way to the right, but not turning the car on, and press one of the buttons and it will work, or also put the key in ignition, turn to right without starting the car, and then take the key out and within 6 seconds double click the unlock button.

My car was made in January 1997. The key batteries have never been changed. Must be something wrong....

Owned my car 3 years now...battery will be very weak after 2 months time and will only unlock the trunk after the 2 months have passed. Unlocking the doors is a crap shoot and I must be within a foot of the car to attempt this. After I change the battery, all is well for another 2 months...A pain in the ass yes but the battery is only a couple of bucks and I stock up on them.

The cost of a new key is crazy. Constantly replacing the battery/dealing with it seems to be the way to go. :cheers:

Where can I get the battery? How much does it usually cost? How exactly do you change the battery? My battery just died on me right now. TIA!

Target, Wal Mart, pretty much anywhere that sells watch batteries. Just pop out your old battery and bring it inside to make sure you get the right model.

My key battery was dead a day after I bought my car. Kinda irked me but spending a few buck for a brand new one wasn't a big deal.

The battery is a standard CR2032, and can be found at just about any drug store or WalMart.

Did you have a problem making the key work again after replacing the battery? I replaced my battery already but it still wont work.

Nope, once I replaced the battery the key worked fine. If you replaced the battery correctly it should work, unless you've got some other malfunction in there. Then I'd suggest going to a dealership.

I'm with Toolpants: must be something wrong. I've had my 01 for almost 2 years now. Never needed to change the battery so far. My Lexus key is past 3 years. Honda key is 8 years. No battery changes on any car.
