Aging Tires

I just had an original Boxster spare tire explode in the trunk on a hot summer day. I wouldn't have noticed, but I got a nasty cut from a broken casing wire poking through the factory cover. If I had been driving on it a year or two ago, that could have been very upsetting.

Thanks to an old posting by "L1ttleBastard" a few years ago after a delightful several hours on the "Tire Rack" website I managed to order a replacement. They are so concerned about selling a tire that isn't an OEM size for year and model, the AI website can't understand the weird size spare. It the forum hadn't given the part number I don't think I would have gotten it ordered. They only had one in stock and wanted me to wait until they obtained 3 more, because having unmatched tire sizes can adversely affect handling.
