Should I buy this Used 2000 Boxster 2.7L with these problems found

Hello Porsche Community,

I am in the process of buying my first porsche as a fun project car. Tried the car and everything seem to work fine until it was brought in to do a pre-purchase inspection where a list of items were identified. Please have a look at the report. The seller is asking for $15000 CAD for the car. Any suggestion would be helpful to what to look out for or things I could do myself for cheap or is it not worth the buy with these issues?

Thank you,

Bosco http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1723667343.jpg

im not a Porsche specialist though I have worked on many other cars. It looks like youd be in for a very expensive time with suspension component replacements and lots of leaks that might require a full engine tear down. In the end it comes down to whether or not you want to pay for all that but id personally say no unless you CAN and want to commit to investing money into it

Not a Porsche Specialist though i have worked on lots of vehicles. Honestly looks like youd be in for one hell of a bill with the suspension component replacements AND multiple leaks they have, could possibly lead to an engine tear down which is not cheap. It comes down to whether or not you actually want to invest quite a bit of money into it or not but id personally say no.

Update: I completely skipped over the price they want it for LOL yea 100% no. that is not worth more than 4000 CAD on a good day with a perfect exterior

Run away, quickly.................

That price is someone's pipe dream. You can have my 2000 Boxster for less than that with almost all those issues addressed. Want to do a road trip?

If you do your own wrenching, most of the problems are maintenance that is to be expected on 24 year old car... that has not been taken care of.
It is worrying that the trunk struts need replacing and that the filters are dirty, these are easy things to do and would indicate an owner who doesn't care about the car... and is a bit dim not to see to these details in order to help to sell it.

Do not buy. A clown was working on it, and it's pretty much a worn out car

spinjockey 08-21-2024 02:54 PM

Not that piling on here is helpful but you could buy a used engine and swap for much less than what it would cost to rehabilitate this car. It sounds like it has been neglected for years and even getting caught up on maintenance would be more than the car is worth at a true market price not the sellers asking price.

Probably being a Canadian car, the odometer is in kilometers. So only 93,000miles.
Still, run Forrest, run!
Can't begin to imagine what it would cost to make that car right again, besides the initial purchase price. (A little over 11,000 USD)

Your prepurchase inspection was an excellent investment, saving you many thousands in repairs above the far overstated asking price. Listen to those who have commented above and seek another Boxster... they are wonderful cars, but this one isn't wonderful, sounds like a money pit.

I'm late to the party, but like everyone said, good job on getting a PPI done.

Given the issues, the car is greatly overpriced. 15,000 CAD is only a little less than the 12,000 USD I paid for my 1998 2.5 manual with 50,000 miles (80,000 km), some minor gremlin in the security system (a microswitch or sensor somewhere needs replacement) and an emissions-related CEL.

I expect to spend no more than 2k to get it all sorted, and the car came with a comprehensive maintenance history folder.

I could've gotten a more pristine/sorted car for less if i wasn't fixated on the color, year and options (1998-99, Arena red, heated seats, no PSM).

I'm sure you can get a much nicer specimen that's been well-maintained at your price point with some patience, flexibility or luck.

Since we're still talking about it... I generally buy cars like that for around $2,500 USD then figure out if I want to part them or play with them for a while. Looking at the PPI it's clear that the maintenance that has been done was done by someone who doesn't know these cars. That may be worse than no maintenance at all.

There have been a few discussions in the past about that noting that if it becomes a more heavy vibration it indicates a worn out dual mass flywheel. I always hope it's just the engine mount or transmission mount. Hope doesn't always work, but most of the 20+ 986s Ive bought had a bad engine mount.

Luckyman01 08-23-2024 07:40 AM

No, pass on this car

AS JBauer said, run, you can do better than this.

That is valuable information, the car has 91.000 mls and I am not sure if it is still on its first clutch. Currently doing the chain + guides but will drive until the clutch or other problems will occur. Thought about the engine mount an think I will change that soon!
