Convertible top pushrod bushing

I just learned this the hard (expensive) way and hopefully this can help out anyone else that runs into this so you can avoid my mistake.

I recently had one of the caps break (for the thire time in two months) on my top push rod AND it got pinched somehow and bent the rod pretty bad. Because I never break anything half way, It bent up the copper bushing and destroyed the rubber grommet that surrounds it.

All easily replaceable except I could not find the bushing anywhere. I eventually found one on ebay and ordered it. What showed up is the correct part I need. But the part number is 999-924-039-00 which is listed as clutch busing for a 944 and 968.

That part you can get easily and cheaply from a variety of sources.

So if you ever need a new bushing for the top push rod, that's the part number. Hopefully you never need one because if you do, you have a lot of work ahead of you to untangle your top and get it working again.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1722538807.jpg

May I ask what material this is made of, it looks like aluminum??

I am asking because I detected "play" in that bushing and think about changing it prophylactically....

Something to consider / check as to why your rod is breaking so often...

A few yrs ago I bought an 09 Wheeler Dealer Boxster S that had a broken cap and bent rod on the passenger side. I replaced it but the clamshell didn't want to close properly. I compared the driver side to the new passenger rod and the driver's side was bent.

Replaced the driver's side and the clamshell fit perfect. So you might want to check the other rod to see if it's bent or not.

i think it is aluminum. It's very stiff and not very bendable. This repair is giving me fits though. The new arm keeps popping off. At least it's not breaking.

The other side looks good and the top does go up and down with just one side attached. The problem is the one I am replacing keeps popping off. I also noticed both pushrods are getting scraped up just past the plastic ball socket where the pushrod is hitting another part of the frame. That doesn't seem tight.
