Stuck replacing the push rod ball joints (Convertible top repair)

Hi,
The convertible top on my 2007 boxster stopped working so I watched some videos and figured out the problem, but I'm stuck doing the repair.
My plastic Push Rod Ball Joints were broken on both sides. I ordered replacements. Opened the top half way. I reached in and removed the broken piece on the ball on both sides. I managed to grab and pull up the rod on the passenger side, but the rod is stuck on the drivers side. I was able to wrap a wire around the driver's side push rod but I cant yank it up. Something is impeding it near the tip. I took a video, although it doesn't show it really well. The tip area might be bent. Does anyone know of a way to open up the area, and make some space so I can pull the rod up and put the new plastic tip on there?

Thanks
