Immobilizer and Key Fobs

This is going to be a somewhat longwinded post as I am trying to start my car. It all started with replacing the light switch - which worked fine and then all of a sudden my rear lights stopped working. I pulled the car out of my carport, and turned it around to back in - so far so good. I was fiddling with the lights and the light harnesses and asked my husband to get in and start the car - nothing happened. We have power (console lights up, windows work) but it will not turn over. I tried everything I could think of. The fobs don't work but we have confirmed the chip is still good in them. I charged the battery and still got nothing. I walked away then as I was getting frustrated. Read some forums and went back to try again. This time when I went to unlock the doors and because i couldn't start the car, the alarm went off and kept going off (it never did turn off). I disconnected the negative battery terminal to turn the alarm off and plugged in the battery charger. Based on what I have read, sometimes it just needs to sit to reset. This was on Friday.
Today (Monday), I went out, I had not locked the car this time, and the alarm still blares when I plug the battery up and the car still turns on but not over. I even tried turning the car on and then connecting the battery but to no avail. I have purchased a new ignition switch but I feel quite certain it is the immobilizer. I am at my wits end with what to do to fix it and I haven't seen any answers on the forums that were helpful yet. As far as I can tell the immobilizer didn't get wet but we have had some pretty intense rains here lately. I still have light problems but that is secondary to getting it started right now. I really don't want to have to it towed but would appreciate any one weighing in the situation.
