If you are in gear, press the gas pedal and the engine speed goes up but the car doesn't accelerate, the clutch is worn. It's usually most obvious in higher gears first.

OK, this should be tell-tale sign of a very worn clutch. Are there any early warning signs?

The clutch gets harder to push. But there's no need to change it until it's slipping.
