Axle diameters

I ordered a used axle for my 04 boxster s and the axle that came in was about 5mm thicker than the one in my car. Is there a reason why it would be thicker than the ones that are in my car ? Will it be safe to drive with one axle that’s thicker than the other one ? Thanks !
