Horn Sounds Under Braking
1999 986 with 21K original miles, owned by me 4.5yr and 12K mi. The horn button has always been sensitive, ie look at it cross eyed and the horn sounds. Recently the horn has begun honking under moderate to hard braking. Happened to my wife first and I thought she was nuts. Happened to me today. Likely a short or a loose connection? Where do I start?

For a quick fix....
Take a business card and fold it in two. Shove it between the horn and the steering wheel. If you do it right, you won't be able see the card. The problem will be solved and your horn will work normally.' There are some bushing that get weak causing the horn assembly to sag. Braking sounds the horn. Been there! |
I have repaired a few. It can be fixed with some small o-rings or you can replace the whole horn bracket. The second half of this post shows a repair I did a few years ago:

I just cut a few little pieces of black window/door insulation foam, I bought at Home Depot and slide the pieces into the thin gap between the steering wheel and the floating horn. Stopped the inadvertent horn going off. Easy Peezy!

Happened to me...I was braking for a light on some rough pavement and the horn went off. Scared the hell out of me as I didn't realize it was my car. Got to our destination, sitting by a pool, and hear a car horn sound and stay on. I thought, "that would be me." Had to go out and pull the fuse. I actually replaced the entire assembly which was quite easy.
