Engine noise when decelerating
So I’ve got an odd issue and I thought I read somewhere that it was timing chain tensioner related but now I can’t find what I read before…
Anyways, I’ve got a 2000 base Boxster and when I first get up to highways speeds then have to decelerate quickly or pop it into neutral for a stop light, I will get a weird noise from my engine. It’s a bit of a rattle and definitely sounds a bit like popping too. It will do it for 3-6 seconds and then stop and won’t do it again when I’m still driving it around unless I shut it off for a bit (30 minutes or so). |

Can you try to get a video of the sound? Would be more helpful in diagnosing. To be honest a popping sound when you accelerate could be a worm engine mount bushing and as the engine moves on acceleration you get metal on metal popping. But that wouldn’t continue after I wouldn’t think. Does it sound like it’s coming from the engine crankcase? Or do you feel it more in the suspension?
If it’s something with your timing chain tensioners a good way to check is to examine your oil filter. Little specs of brown plastic in the filter mean you’re due for a pad replacement. I was able to do myself but it’s a hell of a job. TTGator has a great video to walk you through it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
