Wondow problem/central locking
 

Forgive me. I know this is probably a subject that has been covered several times here, but I didn’t find what I was looking for with my first search.

This morning I went to put the top down on my 986, and when I opened the latch, the windows didn’t drop. I re-latched and unlatched it several times, and nothing.

The top itself works fine.

The windows don’t lower with the window switches or using the key in the door.

The windows do drop when the door latch is pulled and go back up when the door closes.

There are two chirps from the alarm horn when I try to lock the car, and the doors do not lock with the remote.

I know the two beeps indicate a malfunction.

Is there anything I can do/check before I have to take it to a shop or the dealer?

I have a Durametric tool (enthusiast, not Pro).

Use the Durametric to scan for alarm faults, the DME stores the last ten trips.

You have a problematic interior motion sensor (near the rear view mirror) that is not allowing the central locking system to secure the car.

So do I need to replace the sensor? Is this the correct part #996.618.210.02
Sometimes it's sold as the entire dome light unit, and sometimes just the sensor.

If so, I can either order from ebay or find at a junk yard, I would think.

Before I would replace anything, I would be testing the sensor electrically to see if it is actually working or not. You may have a sensor issue, or a wiring problem, and the sensor ain't cheap. And without knowing your year and model, I cannot comment on the part number.

I'm sure of the part number. I've gone ahead and bought a used replacement from ebay for a little over $50, that says it's guaranteed to be working, and 30 day warranty. Anyway, not feeling knowledgeable or qualified to test the sensor, swapping out the unit seems pretty straightforward, and should be a decent test. If it still doesn't work when I've done that, I'm probably going to have to take it to the shop.

It was the right part number, but swapping out the sensor didn’t make any difference. Not sure what my next step is.

As JFP mentioned...you could have a wiring problem. Shooting the parts canon sometimes work, but sometimes doesn't. It's your money after all so spend as you wish, but just be warned....putting in a used sensor is going to have a lifespan of it's own and you could be doing it again in 31 days.

Well, since it apparently isn't a sensor problem, I now have a spare sensor on hand for any future use.

I just don't know where to go from here. I wouldn't even know where to start to check the wiring. I'm considering taking it to a dealer for a diagnosis, but I hate to pay what they'll want just to check it out.

Find an indie who can hook it up to a computer. You might know 15 minutes later.

Or... if you've the time and the patience... post inquiries on how to check those electrical connections so you can hunt down the anomaly and correct it yourself.

I've been waiting years for an electrical gremlin to bite me. It's nipping right now... and I suspect a new light or ignition switch replacement is in my future.
