wheels cleaners
has anyone tried spraying their wheels with regular ol' degreaser from any random store that is not specificaly made for cleaning wheels?
they are all about a dollar or so depending on the store you go to, like that orange degreaser and things like that. would that hurt the wheels in the long run? |
I use plain old blue coral car wash and a brush. If they're really filthy then I use a wheel cleaner, but only when there's no other alternative.

I had a set of ultra light autocross wheels and I sprayed some orange citrus degreaser type stuff on them from Pepboys or similar. Worked great except it stripped part of the clear coat right off and a few days later I had tiny rust pin holes.
I've mostly used two products the ultra safe p21s with a sponge and hose and Poorboys wheel cleaner which is very potent spray on rinse off immediately. Might work well on mesh type wheels instead of dealing with a spoke brush. Chemical Guys is a very popular brand for the pros who look for good quality in larger quantities and lower prices. |
so stay away from it ha?

I've got the same wheels as you do dj and I'd like to find a good cleaner. It's a real PITA to get all those spokes clean, but they sure look great when clean.

Our Concours Judge here in Chicago for the Chicago Region PCA (he also restores old 356's) recommends a 5:1 solution of Distilled Water to Wurth Citrus (www.wurthusa.com) degreaser. Put the solution in a spray bottle to clean your wheels.
I have only used a wheel cleaner once (P21S) in the past 7,500 miles, and this was about 6,300 miles ago. I now wash my wheels with hot soapy water (Zaino Z7 Wash) and wax with Rejex. I have about 3 coats of Rejex on the wheels now. |

The Poorboys wheel rinse believe me you won't have to lay finger on that spoke brush. The only thing as potent for frequent use is the Meguiar's Wheel Brightener which is part of their "Pro Line" and not to be handled by non-pros. So the PB's is a good substitute. You can dilute it for frequent wipe downs. This past weekend I sprayed the barrell of the wheel let it sit a few minutes and all that crap came right off with the hose. Usually I have to get my hand in there and its always a mess. But a clean barrell makes all the difference. Sprayed the wheel well liners too and then coated them with the Fk 425. I'll have to spring for the gallon size next time. |
Ive used "simple green" for quite sometime, works quite well.

Thanks, Perfectlap, I'll check that stuff out.
Has anyone used S100 on their wheels? I use it on my sportbike wheels and it is amazing. It'll get the brake dust, road grime, and chain wax right off the rims. I wonder if it is too harsh for the Porsche rims, though. |
I'm not entirely conviced that s100 and p21s aren't the same company.
Or they both buy allot of their ingredients from the exact same suppliers. Porsche include rebranded p21s wheel cleaner in their tequipment detailing kit. So I'm guessing the s100 is a low cost duplicate of Tequipment as well. |
