Saw a Sky

Last night and that thing looks pretty good. The backend looks like an Aston Martin or something much more expensive. I had to do a double take as I passed him because I haven't seen one yet.

The new Car and Driver compares the Solstice (Pontiac version of the Sky) to a 2.7 Boxster and it actually looks pretty good, taking into consideration that it's $20K cheaper. Apparently the top is a pain in the butt to put up, and they need to do something with that front grill. It has a 260 HP motor - which forces me to think I may need an S version of my boxster.

Cannot believe I'm saying something good about Saturn. But.

The Sky looks better than Solstice to me. And the Redline version is pretty darn competent.

Only having one tiny, almost useless, trunk is not good for more than day trips. I've put $300 worth of groceries in the Box without putting anything in the passenger area. That extra money goes for something!!!! :)

I don't know about the Sky, but the GXP Solstice has a drag cd of .45. That thing is as areodynamic as a barn door. Even with 260 hp the thing tops out at 139 mph. That is just terrible. The boxster has around a .30 cd.

I live in the middle of IL. Most people haven't even seen a Porsche before and they have to ask me what my car is. People here drive domestics but it's usually trucks and family sedans. Nothing like Chi-town.

The real news behind the Sky and Solstice is whether anyone will still need to pay $60K or so to get a real sports car. I know those two cars don't match a Boxster, but when you see BMW offering a Z4M in the $50K range, a loaded 335i with 300hp in the mid-40s, Honda probably introducing a new S2000 in the 30s and other sports cars coming along, you have to wonder whether there'll come a time when you're only buying a Porsche for the badge or for the track. Now, I know some will argue about quality and durability for the extra money, but when I read about the number of low-mileage Boxster engine failures, PCNA's customer-unfriendly behavior and the truly crappy service at some Porsche dealerships, I'm not so sure that holds water either.
