Engine Cleaning Suggestions/Tips
 

Hey Gang,

I am 3 weeks into ownership of a 2001 986 Base "Heidi" 51K miles and giving her some TLC and really want to go after the engine and clean it up.

What do you all recommend on how to do this properly with the right cleansers?

Attached are some pics of the engine compartment but also noticed oil build up on the manifold hose. There are no oil leaks but the oil filler hose has some build up (see pics). Is this normal for a 20 year old car that has never had the engine cleaned?

Hello Nix, what have worked well for me is to first use a couple of cans of engine degreaser from the auto parts store, rinse (** w/Very LOW water pressure, then clean it again using Simply Green (to remove the oily residue of the engine degreaser)..

I would suggest taping off the engine area with plastic sheeting so you can use a hose (at low pressure as Gilles mentioned) without worry about getting it inside the car. I also covered any exposed electronics with plastic and tape, they should be waterproof, but why risk it. I cleaned my engine using simple green and a brush, then I put 303 on the plastic, last time I took the engine cover off it still looked pretty good. :cheers:

The tube in you second photo is the oil fill tube. It's a 3 piece assembly, you're looking there at the middle section. Often the joint between the first section (in the trunk) and that one will fail, causing it to leak when you change the oil. I would clean the engine and pay attention to what happens at next oil change. If it leaks again, time for a replacement.
