Oil Filter Metal Particles Advice

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Forum Members,

I know this comes up all too often, however I have had an engine sitting in storage for 7 years and some metal particles have been found inside the oil filter. A leak down test has been done and passed with an average 2 - 4% across all six banks.

I have had mixed advice from different experts and one things that is clear the IMS needs to be replaced...

Would appreciate some member advice.

Thanks in advance!

All engines generate some metal, the question is what kind of metal? If it is fine aluminum, that could be just ordinary wear; if it is ferrous, that is vastly more problematic.

Use a magnet on the particles,if it sticks...potential IMS bearing issue.

When I 1st bought my preowned 99 Boxster. I had about the same....I believe it was sitting for a long time as well. I removed the oil pan and found some in the bottom of the pan. Cleaned it all up and filter has been pretty clean since. I think it could residual metal from past years. I did how ever replace my IMS. the race seals were torn up and there was signs of beginning wear. Good Luck. V

Thanks for the response guys, nothing magnetic at this stage, however could be aluminium - will find out and get some more feedback on the engine.
