”Check Engine” 100 miles after IMS retrofit
Hi there,
I got myself a used 2003 Boxster S recently with 12 900 km on the meter (around 79 500 miles). It hade been serviced and well kept during its entire life cycle, but after reading horror stories about the IMS bearing failing, I decided to invest in a retrofit of a brand new IMS bearing. I contaced a very well renowned racing team with a Porsche workshop who did the job. They also checked the clutch (no need to change it, they said, as it looked almost new). They - of course - also changed the oil. Everything was great until the first time I shut off and restarted the car again after having driven aprox. 160 km (111 miles). Then the "Check Engine” light came on. Now, there are no service slots available at any workshops until the end of July, but I am really anxious now. The car sounds great, drives great and I can see no oil leaks or anything. What could have happened? Any guessses? |
Get a code reader and post the code(s) here. That helps.

Well with the abundance of information provided my guess is the Flux Capacitor isn't working right

The check engine light may or may not be related to the IMS swap . My hunch is that it is a coincidence . You should be able to purchase a decent quality code reader for $100.00 or less . They are great tools to assist with diagnosis for your Porsche or any other car you own .
As previously stated get the code/s and post them on here . That will make the long distance troubleshooting effort easier and more effective . I am curious , the shop that did the IMS bearing for you they can't spare 5 minutes time to discuss this issue with you ? And read the codes for you ? |

I am Polish and I saw it right away - he was not offensive at all. Just joking. Truth to be told, man, you did not provide any information regarding the Check Engine Light (CEL). It could be some loose wire, not tight fuel cap... Get a code reader, or an app, and get the codes. The good thing is that 90% chances are everything is OK. If the engine is running smooth - mechanically it is fine. |
I liken you request to my end users..."Something is wrong with my computer can you tell me what the issue is?"
Without information no one can offer any help. countless reasons why the MIL would be on, that is why there are codes to be read, which will give you an indication of what to begin your search for but that doesn't mean a specific code will tell you exactly what the issue is. |
C'mon give the guy a break. For the forum regulars, we get your humour and sarcasm. Newcomers have no idea.

He did ask for guesses

Here in the States, you can go to Auto-Zone or Advance Auto and they'll do a free code scan for you, or at least lend you the reader for free.
Do your auto parts stores offer something similar? If so, like other have suggested, get the codes read and post them on here. And like PLP said, if it runs smooth, your engine is fine. |
They moved the engine putting stress on the joints where rubber hoses meats engines. Old brittle hoses. I'll bet that is the source of the CEL. Of course it could also be any of several hundred other things. Don't guess.

Cant U take it back and let them check it,..probably loose wire or something,.??
