Premature upholstery wear?
Greetings all, I've been lurking here for a while, I bought a 2006 Boxster S this summer (guards red w/tan leather, 6 speed of course), have much enjoyed the car (despite only having driven it about 1400 mi in the past 5 months).
Today I saw something a little shocking - there are two spots of wear on the driver's seat where the leather is worn almost completely through, the dye is totally gone. I NEVER have anything sharp or protruding in my pockets. Have there been any reports of thin leather or premature seat wear in these cars? I'm astonished if this was caused by a button on a coat or jacket. I wear the same clothes when I drive this car as my other cars, and those rack up 70,000+ miles with no discernible seat wear. Is this a common complaint, or do I have a defective seat? Thanks! |
Something has to be rubbing...I have an '05 that is my daily driver. No signs of wear on the seats at all. Sorry.

I have an 06 987S with Sand Beige leather and everything looks great. Post some pictures so we can see the marks and location.
I am careful not to wear certain types of belts or like a jean jacket with large metal buttons. Be careful what your passangers wear too. Especially metal fashion belts that my wife likes to wear. Lots of jean pants have metal rivets...another no-no! |
I usually wear ass-less chaps...

note to self: no eating dinner while reading Rail26 posts.
regarding leather seat, you've got a warranty claim. Once you get the new leather I recommend cleaning with 1z leather a terry cloth towel every other month and then moisturize with lexol or the Porsche Tequipment leather once a month. Most people never do this and the tell tale cracks of dry leather neglect start to become visible. |
I have a 99' w/ 55k and only minor signs of wear on the driver's side seat, passenger still looks new. I only treat the seats with Meguiar's Leather Conditioner/Cleaner once a month with a terry cloth towel.

"Johnson RoD" that sounds so phallus!! What is it, other than it "extending and contracting" depending on weather. Hmmmmm? |
haha, its not a real part at all. Someone posted that "parts store" in a earlier thread on this forum, its full of "pretend" items for your car... like a engine oil bypass kit to prevent oil from getting into your engine and getting it all dirty.
