Remove Door Latch
Can anyone tell me how to remove part #12 in the image below from...
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1620619745.jpg ...part #14 shown here? http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1620619762.jpg I'm trying to replace the door hinge and can't see well enough how to disconnect the door latch from the outer door handle. |
If you're trying to remove the latch itself (#14) what worked for me was to remove the outside handle and pull it out of the door.
This gave me enough room to lever out the arm that the plastic connecting rod (#12) connects to on the rod. Had to get a finger in there and pull it down. Then you can rotate the handle assembly up and remove it through a gap where it connects to the arm on the latch. It's easier if you unbolt the latch first so you can get a bit more room to work. But no matter how you slice it it's a PIA. Best of luck. |
I usually work from within the door, but what Zordrack says will work.
Here's some pics. With the door panel removed, looking back at the door handle from the inside: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1620660537.jpg Handle and latch close, but not connected: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1620660682.jpg As they sit within the door when installed: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1620660781.jpg The forum host, Pelican Parts, has some good instructions. https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/78-BODY-Door_Handle_and_Lock/78-BODY-Door_Handle_and_Lock.htm Got it figured out now? |
This is awesome! I felt the collar and was able to slide it forward already. So to remove the threaded arm that attaches to the outer door handle, you just rotate that piece out of the slot?
|
Yes, just rotate it out. the bottom side is an open slot.

LMFAO I feel like such an idiot now.
I had to replace both door latches and spent hours of swearing (in multiple languages) and literal drops of blood trying to fight getting everything back together in just the right way for the handles to be flush. ..... And all I had to do was slide the collar back and get it into place..... Thanks guys. This is a lesson I will not be forgetting :) |
78F350 - thanks for the help! You turned a major project into a 20 minute exercise. Tackling the passenger door will be cake now!
BTW, I popped off the retaining clip on the old door latch that holds the micro switch in place. The micro switch was completely shot and the cam that the micro switch rides on was gouged and really rough. Happy to see that it would be difficult to get this working again. |
