No sound through speakers
 

Well I’m at a loss. I have a 1998 Boxster. I thought I had made the headunit swap as easy as it could be. I literally only swapped one aftermarket Alpine headunit for another! Same harness, same 4 RCA plugs, same radio antenna. The headunit powers and works just fine, but there is zero sound coming through the speakers!

I have never had a problem with the first headunit (just wanted Bluetooth capability). It appears to be wired professionally for the first aftermarket Alpine unit but that was with the PO.

This is what I have done for troubleshooting:
-check and replace fuses for stereo and sound. They weren’t blown I just wanted to cover all my bases
-replace stock amp
- disconnect/reconnect negative battery terminal
- the open the drivers door, lock the car, close the door procedure
-drove the car and shut it down. Twice.
-I even put the 1st headunit back in! Still no sound.

Is there something I’m missing that Porsche has installed to prevent headunit removal? This is driving me nuts!

Nothing special about the system except for the security code for the oem head unit. It sounds to me like you blew the amp fuse (or somehow shorted out the amp)? Try checking the power leads on the amp to see if it's getting juice. If you are, check the leads out to see if there is juice coming out.

I would start out checking that everything works as assumed.

Get out your volt meter and make sure the amp is getting power.
Both the constant and remote lines.
Make sure ground is good.
Make sure all connectors are properly seated.
Check continuity through the actual speakers.
Check continuity in the line level cables.
Hook up computer speakers to the head unit and make sure it's actually putting out signal.

That's what I would check first.
Never trust the basics. It's always the stuff you assume to be right that end's up biting you in the rear.

As I was writing the original post I realized how ridiculous it sounded. So I went back and followed each and every wire. Apparently when I removed the headunit one of the harnesses that was in between the amp and the Alpine harness got disconnected. So what I thought was the correct wiring was actually wrong. I am very relieved!
Now I have an extra amp.
