Ignition key (tumbler) cylinder removal
 

I want to remove my 98' Boxster's ignition key (tumbler) cylinder for cleaning and lubrication. So far I've seen one YouTube video explaining the following:

1. remove the plastic surround
2. insert key and turn to the on position
3. Stick a paper clip into the little slot located in the o'clock position all the way until the tumbler portion "unlocks"
4. disconnect the wire plug
5. now the cylinder portion is free to be cleaned.

Questions:
1. Is that procedure correct?
2. Once the tumbler is out can I remove the key to clean the inside?
3. How "easy" is the re-install...is it just the reverse using the paper clip or does it just "pop" into place and lock?

Finally, how easy is it to F--k up and not be able to start the car? Any "words of wisdom", tips, tricks, warnings???

Dont bother

Realistically though it's just easier to spray a little white grease in it, put key in and turn the key a few times. No need to really take it out.

The key tumblers don't really have many issues.
Just use some spray lube and spray it in the key slot.
The locking mechanism for the steering and the ignition electrical switch are what usually have the issues.

Thanks!!....I just went out to the garage and using a "dry lock spray" made for cleaning and lubricating locks I sprayed the hell out of it then ran a pipe cleaner through it.....the pipe cleaner came out pretty clean, just wet. Then I used the key and all seemed fine. I could definitely hear the "clunk" when I pulled out the key, which I assume is the steering wheel lock engaging....and the radio shut down. as it should. (I always keep the radio on when driving).

Whew.....I really didn't want to pull the tumbler out....thanks!

yes the clunk is the steering lock;)

Not sure if my sort of "flooding" it with lock lube did the trick but the 23 year old lock works great now and the steering wheel lock "clunk" sound in much more "distinctive" than before. ALL good!

To get back to your original questions...
1) yes - you may have to turn the key a bit past the on position
2) yes
3) it is easier if you use the paper clip when reinstalling.
Manoeuvering the paper clip around the head of the key is a pain so it is easier if you remove the plastic head of the key and just insert the key blade. Easy to do just be careful with the "pill" that is inside and that identifies the key to the immobiliser.
