Any updates here?

I drained the oil and took a look at the filter. Lots of expensive looking glitter in there. I'm not even sure if it's worth dropping the oil pan at this point. Considering my options for the next step.

Would you take a moment to post the picture here... on this forum. The icloudwhateversecondarysite isn't working for me. I'd like to see what you're looking at/ Thanks.

get a magnet, run it around and see if those flecks get picked up by the magnet.

What about pictures of the filter?

If the magnet doesn't pick up those flecks then it's going to be your cam tensioner pads, which is common to happen. Pain to replace with the engine in the car, but it is possible.

My advice to P-C is that if it is ferrous material, the engine will need a complete disassembly/cleaning and rebuild to be good again. Probably better to buy a used 2.5L replacement and there are some affordable ones available in the Florida (local) market.
As an upgrade a '99 3.4L would be nice, but not good economically unless anyone has a good lead on one.

-If it's ferrous, does anyone see a point in trying to tear it down further for repair?
-Any thoughts on where metal could come from that would not require a full rebuild?

since it is floating I doubt it is metal.

Full rebuild wouldnt be known until dropping it & doing a tear down, borescope, etc.

My bet is the cam pads or rails depending on color
