Unidentified Wire and Control Unit in Rear Trunk

Hello everyone.

Vehicle: 2001 986 S w/ 6 spd manual

I've got a leaking coolant tank, so I removed the rear trunk carpeting to diagnose. I noticed this "probe" looking wire (tip circled in yellow) kind of dangling free in there:

that appears to be wired into this "control unit" (circled in yellow):

I looked in Bentley and 101 Projects as well as tried some google searching to identify it's purpose. Does anyone recognize these items and if so, any special care required when putting the carpet back in?

Thank you for your time!

Rich

EDIT: Sorry for lack of details. The cable appears to be Belden type 8240, so perhaps a simple coaxial cable. Is this just an antenna of some sort?

What option codes do you have on the sticker in the front trunk?

any part numbers on the box?

Suspect it is aftermarket and I bet that extra black wire on the dme mounting bracket goes to it. Could be some kind of Lowjack device, but doubt it factory.

Hey! Thanks, I think you nailed this one on the head. I did a google image search on old lojack units and it looks like that's exactly what it is. I'll call this one settled.

Hey! I'm kind of the same way. The community pitches in to help with an issue, the least I can do is report back!
