2003 S alternator repair
What’s a reasonable independent price alternator replacement w/belt? Major metro. How many labor hours? Anything to look out for?
Regards Doug |
Prices range....I did the voltage regulator (back of the alternator, common failure point) for $50 in the driveway. Belt is $30 and takes 5 minutes to swap 'while you're in there'.
At a shop, figure 1-2 hours of labor and $3-400 in parts. |
Replacement? Why not have it rebuilt?
I paid $200 for my alternator, from my car, to be rebuilt and with a 2 year warranty. I removed/reinstalled the alternator to mitigate the expense. The belt? You may pay ~$30 for a new one. Edit: I now surmise you're not turning the wrench. Good luck. |
Depends on parts. A rebuilt OEM alternator form Pelican Parts is listed at $1,371.75. Reman Bosch is listed at $319.00. I remember a quote from the dealer several years ago was north of $1,700.00 for new OEM.
Depending on your DIY skills, it is a reasonably straight forward repair; https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/82-ELEC-Alternator/82-ELEC-Alternator.htm The voltage regulator is an easy/cheaper repair also. |
And you can get a reman one at Autozone for under $200 or a new one for around $250. Both with "lifetime" warranty
They work just fine It is a little bit of a PITA to R&R, but very much a DIY |
