Boxster Hardtop Survey Paint it or not?
After storing the perfect condition hardtop for two years (and almost selling it), we finally found the right car for it.
I know it's a 987 not a 986, but the question applies to both. The color is A1 black, the top is GT silver. Would you leave it as two tone or would you change the top color to black? I kind a like it two tone, does that cheapen the look or make it special? Hope there are lot's of opinions out there. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/Pic11604703586.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/Pic21604703603.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/Pic31604703614.jpg |
Leave it be. It looks awesome like that

I would paint it if it was on my car. It doesn't match the color of the car, it looks out of place, but it`s your car, so if you like it that's all that matters  .
I didn`t know the 986 hard tops fit the 987  |

Definitely paint it.

I like the combination as it is. Speaking as an engineer with two art degrees, the silver top works well with the silver accents like the side vents and wheels. The lighter color of the top visually lightens the composition, and makes the car look lower. Besides, two-tone cars are coming back into vogue these days, so it's topical and stylish. Keep it as it is.

I have seen black HT on silver cars and IMO it looks right. Same look as when the black canvas is up. Something about the silver over black that doesn't work for me. Follow your gut/heart.

Paint it. Why not?

If it was a black top on a silver car (or a black top on just about any color) I think it would look OK. In this case, I vote for painting the top to match the car.
I used to have a white Miata and I had a red hard top. One of my co-workers called it the "Santa Car." I eventually saw a post on Miata.net from a guy who had a white top on a red car. I met him and we swapped tops. |
I think a black carbon fibre wrap would look cool.
|
I had the same issue. Black with a silver top. Had it painted. It was originally red then silver now black. Cost$225. Match it up.

I bought a quart of Arctic Silver paint for my blue HT I found for for my Arctic Silver Box S. After standing back and looking at the blue/silver...the paint is still on the shelf. Looks great!
|
I think it looks good. I suggest that you leave it and if you eventually tire of it and want a change, paint it then.
One time I took the hardtop off my red car and was looking for a place to set it. An Arctic Silver car was nearby. ...do not mix Guards Red with Arctic Silver: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1604759621.jpg  |
Honestly, you can’t go wrong either way and like Seal1968 said, a black carbon fiber wrap would also look good. IMO if it was mine, I would leave it as is, I think it looks great. Good luck with your decision

I like it two tone, You seem to too. So why spend money to please someone else's tastes.
You can always change your mind later and do it. See how it grows on you. |

Hardtop paint it or not
Hello All!
It's been a day and a half and I thought I make a tally. I ran this on the 986 Forum and on Planet 9. Here are the results based on members comments so far: 986 Forum/Planet 9 2 tone 6/8 Paint it 7/1 do either 1/1 Total of 24 comments with a recommendation. Keep it coming, this is fun! |
I'd keep the two tone. The silver top ties in well with the silver air intake and wheels.
|
My thought was the top needs to match, until I see this combo. You are right, it looks good, coordinated with wheels and trim and makes the car look lower.
You can always change it, but it looks really good as is. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
