Boxster Hard Top Prices
 

I've been looking for a hard top for quite some time, hoping to find something local. I've seen a bunch of them come up, but don't want to pay for, or risk the shipping.

I decided to take another look today, and my pants fell around my ankles. These things have nearly tripled in price in short order. Are people getting these ridiculous prices for these things? The only way I'd even remotely consider paying $3K for one is if was in Ocean Jade Metallic, which just ain't gonna happen. If folks are really getting these prices, I'll take it off the list. No way in hell I'm paying $3K+ for a hard top.

I haven't been too plugged in on hardtop prices, but I would say the average price is around $1200, in a range of $900-1800 depending on the color and condition. I paid $850 12+ years ago for my color. That said, they don't make them anymore, there are fewer and fewer every year, and just like all Porsches they will cost more over time. $3k is way too expensive, even $2k is too much in my opinion.

I would look locally, and on the classifieds here and other Porsche forums. eBay is not the place to try and buy a hardtop. And this is probably the worst time of the year to look, since it just started to get cold. I can't imagine there are many hardtop in Florida, so you need to be willing to spend a weekend driving to pick it up, just install spinlocks before you go. Good luck with the search! :cheers:

OK, thanks for bringing a sense of reality to the situation. I'm fine in the $1,200 +/- range, and would of course pay a premium in my color, but with so few cars imported in Ocean Jade Metallic, I'm sure a fraction of those came with a hard top, so there's no way I'll find one of those!

As rick3000 said $3K is waaaay to much! I have had notes left on my car asking if I'd like to sell my arctic silver hardtop. One person offered $1600. for it. It's not for sale as I live in a wet area and use the hardtop 6 months out of the year. A friend who races told me they are in demand because of rules at some tracks.

i was lucky and checked CL every day, came across an arctic silver hardtop in good condition about 3hrs away from me. I arranged pickup and paid $950 for it (no negotiation, fair price and i didnt want to risk losing it). i'm happy i got it for the price i paid but have yet to actually put it on my car almost a year later lol.

There was a black one posted on Ebay in Florida recently for $3,000. The seller told me I'd be "lucky to find one" for less than $2,800 when I contacted him. I've never rolled my eyes back that far.

I asked in one of the FB groups why Boxster Hardtops are going for between $2000 and $3000 while 996 hardtops seems to be gong for around $800. Some people laughed at the questions, while a few said simply supply and demand. A lot more 996 hardtops were made. That said, one of the guys here in CT contacted me that is wiling to let his hardtop go for $1500. I am not really looking for one unless I come across one at a decent price in my color (black). If anyone is interested, I can get you in contact with him.

Yesterday I saw one on the Palm Springs Craigslist. Guy has one in La Quinta for just a little over a grand.

And they're not racing 996 cabs. It's probably the Boxster Spec guys who are driving up the prices. As the early 986 prices drop, it becomes a cheap vehicle to get into Spec racing. Kind of like the 944 was 15-20 yrs ago.

They use fiberglass tops that bolt to the cage not the stock one
