Back Up Camera Advice

Hi everyone, I hope you are all staying healthy!

I have to ask for some of your assistance in installing a back up camera and display unit in my 2001 986 base. I’ve searched the forum and the web and I just can’t find any quality kits to purchase or DIY tutorials on how to install it. Where do I even start?

Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!

A quick search of the Google shows several wireless options. I remember this Indiegogo campaign from last year. What is your budget? Please post up what you finally decide on.

The car is, like, 6 feet long and 3 feet wide. Back-up camera? :D

Particlewave had a DIY with a bit of review on a rear view mirror system. I think in the end he did something different, but you might want to consider it:

I have a wired system in one of my cars I put in years ago. Basically did a 2 DIN stereo install, mounted the camera on a license plate frame and followed other wire bundles with the video output. If I was to do it now, I'd definitely just go with a BT camera.

Thank you for those suggestions! I’ll take a look.

I think my budget is about $500. I called my local Porsche specialist for a quote on labor and parts, just waiting to hear back.

Good question. I did not originally plan to add one to my Boxster.

My wife has a Highlander and I decided to install one on her car after a local family drove over their own child in their driveway because they didn't see the child run into the blind spot behind the car. It is a huge problem for SUV's and minivans. https://usa.streetsblog.org/2007/05/24/blind-spots-in-suvs-still-killing-kids/

I gradually upgraded all of the cars in my family's 4-car fleet to double-din head units. (I bought two of the units used from Woody/Itsnotanova for reasonable prices.) The back up cameras are not expensive and its easier to add them while you have the dash torn apart. I had grown accustomed to using the camera in the other cars and when the Boxster's time for an upgrade came, I decided to add it.

When the top is down, the back up camera doesn't add much utility. With the soft top up it is nice to have. It is especially handy for parallel parking and when backing into a space with a parking stop. I consider it a precision-parking aid.

Just for the record, Boxsters are longer than 6 feet and wider than 3 feet.

I've a back up cam in the 2012 Edge. Came in handy... until it petered out at about 125K (now 190K). I had to smirk when I read the "article" to which you referred only because even though my children are raised... and I've no neighborly children...still I pay attention for kids, dogs, whatever... before I get into my truck or car. I haven't missed the truck backup cam for 65K miles now because I'm an adult... and don't need to rely on nanny features. While I can sympathize with the parents who have run over their, or other's kids... they're dolts and idiots who weren't paying attention in the first place. It'd be nice if the "article" illustrated what were the ages of the drivers who backed or ran over kids. I bet it would be revealing.

Yeah, Boss... I know how wide and long is the 986. It becomes obvious everytime I compare the size to my neighbor's 2012 Camry. I'm not saying a cam isn't effective in an SUV, but people need to pull their head from their ass and start paying attention BEFORE they get in ther car.

Cheers.

A Boxster may or may not need a back up camera but I found that installing one was a fun project. The main reason I installed mine was that my car's double din Android head unit is capable of displaying a back up image. Now that it's installed I use it when backing up more than I thought I would even though I installed the camera more because I could and less because I thought I needed it.

You can take a look at the installation here;

Mine came with a double-din radio w/backup cam, but I hardly use it. It comes on when I put the car in reverse, and it works fine, but I just use the mirrors. I wouldn't have invested the time or money to install one.

I did, however install a rear-view mirror backup cam in my work van. I use that one constantly, because all the tools, equipment and partition in the back rendered my rear-view mirror useless. Now I can see if a cop is behind me ;)

Not only that, it records front and back, so if some joker causes a wreck either in front or rear-ends me I'll have it on video.

I’d like to eventually install one for precise parking. In LA, parking exactly within the lines, red, yellow, green, blue, end zones can get expensive. Every time I park I have to get out and check. I’m thinking a camera front and rear would speed my parking.

Which radios support two cameras?

GustaGo 04-25-2020 11:47 PM

I installed mine last summer with similar budget but decided to go just with the back camera (AUTO-VOX Cam 6 from Amazon just $20) and a single din unit (Too lazy to try to install a the double-din so I got the AVH-3400NEX on sale at Crutchfield). The system is working well and it wasn’t to difficult to install (I expended more time with the rear speakers that with the whole unit and camera installation, such a pain!!).

Junkley, I know Pioneer have several double-din models that support two cameras, for example the AVH series - 521EX, 1550NEX. Also, Alpine and Sony have some models supporting 2 cameras.

I too was looking for a backup camera.
I was backing out of my garage and forgot my car was in the driveway. I wasn't looking and was looking on my phone to close the garage door, and almost sideswiped the car.
I bought this the other day at Costco.
It works great and totally wireless and the camera is solar powered (also can USB charge it) the monitor has to be plugged into cigarette lighter, just have to find a place to mount the screen. It comes with a mount but I want a clean look and don't want to start putting suction cups on the windshield.

I installed my nex4660 double din and bought the pioneer camera just cause. Installation isn’t too hard. I never have my top down and I got a glass back so I can barely see anything would be my reasoning

Tried to double side tape the monitor and just wouldn't work anywhere since the back is not flat, so I used the included suction cup mount.
Not really a clean looking install bit the camera works just fine. And the turning of the monitor can be set with hand motion so that's nice, don't have to touch the screen.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1593370091.jpg

My car came with a camera connected to a double-din radio and the backup cam comes on when I put it in reverse. If you don't want to go through a major mod like that, you can try what I used in my work van:

It's a front camera that mounts over top of your rear view mirror with a rear camera that mounts anywhere in the back. I chose to mount mine high so it'll work more like a rear-view mirror. It is great in my van because with the partition and all the equipment I have back there my rear view mirror was rendered useless.
