Parasitic Drain
 

Good morning,

Sorry for another parasitic drain post....

2000 Boxster, ~81,000 miles, recently developed drain, completely discharges over 3-4 days.

13-14a drain w/ everything shut off. Localizes to the A5 15a fuse. Fuse card says A5 powers instrument illumination, locating light, & number plate light.

Thoughts or comments on where to go from here?

Ummm... I always keep my 98’ plugged into its own battery tender when I’m not driving it....so my battery never drains no matter a parasitic drain or not and my battery typically lasts at least 8 yrs.

Having said that I suppose you could pull the fuse, make sure the battery is fully charged and just let it sit and check the battery voltage after 3-4-5-6 days.

A possibility could be your ignition switch.... not the tumbler section but the electrical switch at the end of the tumbler section.
There are lots of threads and videos available on DIY “ignition switch” replacements. From what I understand it’s a VERY common issue. The switch controls a lot of electrical items in the car.........

I bet that’s your issue.

While monitoring drain, disconnect the gauge cluster. Any change? Then remove the bulb from the locating light. Any change? Remove number plate bulb. Any change? etc..etc..

That means that the drain is on that circuit, but does not mean the items listed are the actual source. Someone may have tapped into one of those circuits and added something that is the actual source.

Not sure if a maintainer can keep up w/ a constant 13-14a load.

Any chance the front or rear trunk is open? The light in the front trunk goes on even when on the second latch. I unplugged the light in the front trunk all winter because I leave it gapped for my battery tender.

Honestly not sure what fuse it's on.. not sure what a locating light is.

Have you adjusted your radio settings?

Seriously, the little RED flashing light on the unit has been known to run a battery down quickly.
