Alternative climate control unit (with and w/o compressor)

So, I know some or all gt3 996s did not come with AC and this is the fan control unit that they get. Maybe some AC delete guys have also retrofitted the same unit.

Porsche part number 996-572-101-00-01C. Not sure if the trim piece is a separate part number. Let me know if it is.

This unit is very similar to the one that came in the VW mk4 golfs and jettas with AC and no AC, also they are significantly cheaper. VW part numbers are 1J0 820 045 C and 1J0 819 045 C respectively.

I don't like the backlit display units on the 986 as they seem a little outdated to me, and these VW units can be modified to have a more modern look.

So the question is does anyone know more and have researched these? and will the VW parts fit the 986 with their trim pieces?

The control unit like that in the MK4 Beetles has mechanical cable connections for the mixing door and mode selection. I'm not sure if there's a VW version that is all electronic like the 986s.

I thought I saw 2 electrical sockets on the back like the existing 986 unit.

Can someone confirm if they plug into the 986’s harness?

I’ve seen some very early example 986 Boxster with analog dials for AC control similar to what you’ve posted. I’m sure you could source one from a wrecker since it’s likely not very desirable of a part. It might have been a Europe only option so check the UK fleabay.

That said, I have no idea what else needs to be modified changed to revert the digital control setup to analog.

I tried looking for an analog dials Porsche unit with AC but I couldn’t even find a part number or a picture. They probably never made AC enabled ones, just the AC delete unit that I posted.
