Options when replacing race style steering wheel with OEM airbag wheel on 99 Boxster
Hi everyone, I'm a new member here and recently picked up my first Porsche! It's a 1999 with 125K on the clock and running like a champ.
I'd like to swap out the installed Momo steering wheel from the PO and move back to an OEM steering wheel with airbag. While Momo is sweet, I'd prefer the extra safety of the airbag. That said, it looks like the 986 can upgrade to a 3-spoke set up vs. the MY99 4-spoke steering wheel. Are these the right parts I need for a 1999 car? Will any year 996/986 combo of wheel & airbag work? Here are some samples I've found on ebay: 2001 steering wheel: Airbag unit: Here is car. Absolute blast to drive! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1580373696.jpg |
Yes, those will work and all 986/996 steering wheels are interchangeable.
You may need a clock spring, too. |
I have all the parts for a 4-spoke setup, if you're interested. I'm wanting to switch out to a racing wheel.
I actually like the 4-spoke look on the older 2.5s, but I'm also one of those weirdos that prefers amber lights. Regardless, PW is right; those parts will work, but you will need a clockspring to hook up the airbag/horn. Welcome to the forum! You'll love every minute of having a 986. Also, you could try poking around on here for any parts you need; there are often very good deals. |
Which MOMO wheel?

Make that two weirdos who prefer amber lights. Welcome and safe travels.

love amber lights...pinnacle of old school look (except of a 356/911 green). |
5... I’m down with amber too. Definitely need a clock spring. You will need to find out how the PO disabled the airbag sensor. Unfortunately you won’t know till you are in there. Hopefully, they used a nice and easy resistor bung and didn’t clip any wires. If they were clipped, the job just got harder as you will need to source a plug on the column side and wire it in. When you buy a clock spring, if you buy used, make sure the little “y” shaped tabs are still intact. I recommend going new... An impact driver makes the job 100% easier as well. One last hint, the airbag bolts are VERY easy to cross thread, as they are made out of butter... ask me how I know.
