Rear windshield

Dear All,

I went to the junkyard last weekend because a Boxster ended up there and I was gonna pull the engine. I got there too late, it was already claimed and I was outnumbered to get into a fight for it. Another interesting this car had though, is a glass rear window:

Looks like the PO removed the original plastic windshield and glued this one in, which I guess is from a later model. Would this work? The plastic version folds in the middle when closing, so I don`t see how this worked out. Or it`s a common thing to fix these like this? Should I go back and get it?

I've had two '99s; both had glass rear windows... didn't know they came otherwise.

The glass, when the top is back, sits under (what would be) the middle of the roof. It rests there concave facing down. Never had an issue with either car; so I guess it works as good as stock.

Mine is a `99 and has a plastic window. I think the first boxsters they all came out like that. Maybe what you had on yours was something like this? And perhaps the same on this car.

The glass rear window was introduced in 2002. All earlier cars (97-2001) had plastic rear windows.

And yes, the plastic windows folded when the top was opened. Some owners would even get out and manually "chop" the middle of the plastic window to help it fold nicely when opening the top.

Read all about the "chop" here: http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/55974-automatic-top-chop.html

Many 97-2001 cars have had the original plastic window top replaced with a glass window so its pretty common to find the glass rear window on earlier cars.

Go back and get it? That roof looks like a piece of ****************. I wouldn't put that decrepit piece of junk on my car. Just go buy a new one, get it over with.

Porsche started putting a 4 bow top with a glass window on bosxters for the 2003 model. If it's a 3 bow top then it's an aftermarket canvas top. That looks like a factory glass window top to me because the glass is curved. Every aftermarket top I've seen has flat glass. I say grab it for the frame.

The whole roof was probably changed. The glass window is much smaller than the plastic. Can't imagine just glueing glass in the hole where plastic was.

2003 (at least in the U.S.), but otherwise correct.

MY2003 cars were sold in 2002 and are often registered as 2002.

Rear window.
The only "windshield" is in front of you.

Except when you are backing up at high speed.
