Different Ignition Switch issue
I am having ignition switch issues but not sure what pieces need replaced, or possibly just cleaned and lubricated.
All electrical parts of the switch work fine. What does not work: 1. When you start the car the key does not spring back to the on position fully. You must remember to turn the key back slightly after starting. 2. When removing the key the steering lock does not always engage. To get the steering lock to work must giggle the key in lock after taking it out (re-insert the key about 1/8" and giggle) and sometimes turning the steering wheel back and forth seems to help. This is in a 2000 S that sat for over 7 years due to immobilizer issues. |
You will probably need to replaced the switch mechanicals. Porsche released an updated version to fix these issues.

From what I know, the mechanism has two basic parts, the tumbler portion that accepts the key and the electrical switch part that attaches to the rear of the tumbler assembly. Porsche no longer sells just the switch portion but Audi does.
Just a guess but it sounds like your tumbler assembly is the problem. I may be off-base on that, but that's my guess. |
Update: The electrical portion on the back of the switch was the cause. This part also has the return spring (turns key back to run from start) and stops for how far the key is supposed to turn when off. Both the spring and stops in mine where broken and caused all my problems.
Thanks for the help. |
So...you JUST replaced the electrical portion? Did order the part (Audi) and did you replace it yourself?.......I ask because I plan on doing the same when my car comes out of winter storage. Difficulty? Costs? etc etc.
|
Yes I just replaced the electrical portion. Part # URO 4A0905849B at amazon was 10.53 shipped. Took about 20 minutes to do. Besides having to lay upside down under the dash it was not so bad.

FORD is also Fixed Or Repaired Daily.
My original ignition switch lasted 13 years. I got a replacement one from NAPA in a pinch and it lasted all of 6 months. I subsequently had the steering column lock and switch converted to the updated version, which still uses the original tumbler lock and keys. |
