Maybe something from a shoe? Perhaps inadvertently stepped in a spilled gas puddle and brought it in? You would smell that though... odd.

Maybe it was leaking from the AC condensate that stained the carpet. When my drain was blocked up with green foam from the blend door, condensate would drip on my foot once in a while. Just a thought.
