Security Camera Options?
 

Okay here is the deal. I keep getting nicks into my car's passenger side (USA) rear finder right around the wheel arch and over the top of the finder, like something being dragged across it. The color of paint left behind around the wheel arch is red. A certain red Ford F-150 parks next to my car every day, it's mandated where we have to park. I started parking over enough to keep from getting the red nicks into the paint and that's when I stated getting the occasional scratches across the top of the finder.

So what I would like to do is mount a security camera in the rear window area to record while I'm parked in my mandated spot and the F-150 goes and comes. I need something small as to not be seen easily, but good enough to get nice video and sound from the recording. This is a touchy situation as this is a family member (brother-in-law) and we live in the same home.

Any suggestions?

I guess the key function to look for is "Parking Mode"

For what you need, any cheapo $10-$20 dashcam would do.

It's not that simple, really. Most cheapo cameras have loop recording with maybe an hour or two of storage. (depending on what size card they can accept) If the car is sitting overnight, any event may get recorded over. Even if it has g-force recording, a light scrape may not be enough to trigger it, and it won't get saved.

Looks like "parking mode" may be the better feature because it seems to be more sensitive. Even then, it may not even catch it.

Most have continuous recording and can accept micro SD cards with more than enough storage for a full 24 hours of recording. ;)
I bought a lot of 2 for $16 several years ago and they have many features (1080p video with audio, impact, motion detection, night vision, loop recording, continuous, micro SD up to 64gb, etc.).

There's no need for anything too fancy if all he wants to do is record.

That all sounds pretty good. Maybe the cheapo cameras I got weren't as good as the ones you got.

I needs it to be pretty unnoticeable and easy to move for when I get in the car and put the top down.

You have to look closely at the specs.
The continuous recording option may not be obvious, but usually all you have to do is shut off loop recording.

Also pay attention to the amount of memory it will accept (8gb is fine for most, but will not get a lot of video in continuous).

Untoticeable? Why so soft? I'd have the ****************er mounted so everyone could see it. I'd mount that ****************er to a toilet plunger. Oh, yeah. You'd know I was taping your ass.

Rear window? I'd buy a legit looking camera... and a few fakes. I wouldn't be ****************ing around if someone is being a dick when parking next to my rides.

I mounted a solid-fake camera in my carport, above my storage cubby... including the "wires" to add further legitimacy. Parkers on each side are like angels now. I told my neighbor if he get's any closer than the inch he parks next to the wall... I'm getting him a ribbon.

I'm sure he's given it considerable though and decided, for whatever reason, it's best in his situation to keep it covert.

As a deterrent, it's best to have cameras visible. If you want to actually catch someone in the act, covert cameras are best.

Bingo! I can't exactly accuse a person of doing something that I never caught them in the act of doing. Once caught, it will end.

Anyways, been looking around. I think I'm going to go with a full blown 2 channel system. One front camera and one rear camera. Seems like a good idea to have a dash cam setup anyways.

This setup has my fancy. The rear camera could be easily angled to watch that rear finder by mounting it on the roll bar area and not be noticeable.

I use the BlackVue 900s 1 channel records in 4K accepts up to 128gig card ($32 cnd)

You can hardwire it with a box that monitors your battery voltage, if it drops too low it stops power to the dash cam.

Nice choice. Bit pricey for my taste, though. I guess it's worth it if it does everything you need.

I looked at that one, but I really don't need 4k (I don't even have a device that will display at 4k) and the rear camera is only 1080p, which is no different then the IROAD X9 rear camera. Plus I've heard of issues where that unit shuts down if it gets too hot.

As far as power usage, the IROAD X9 that I'm looking at is a low power unit when in parking mode and in the software you can set the unit to shut off if the battery gets to a certain level. It has the OBD power cable which is nice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H4u0kEzlAU

He was talking about getting a 128GB MicroSD card for $32 CND. Which I will be getting, just not from the company that sells the unit as they charge $60 for it and I can get a SAMSUNG 128GB PRO Endurance (last longer) for $34 or a standard card like they sell at $60 for $20 from Newegg.

Maybe I'm nuts, but it seems that moving would be a bit more work than simply installing a dashcam.

Wait, you mentioned this person with the red F150 is your brother in law? Why not just speak to him, and ask him to be a little more mindful when next to your car?
