79 and still Boxing

Hi everyone,

just had my 79th birthday, car has done 69,000 kms (2003 2.7 Tip) not sure how much longer I will be able to drive it but good so far.

The only issue is of course the dreaded IMS which has not been changed, it would be interesting to know the age and mileage of those cars in which the IMS failed.

I am thinking of doing the solution plain bearing mod on our car, but not advertised here in Australia.

That’s really cool that you are still enjoying your Boxster. Hope you have many more years of fun from it! As for the IMS, I personally never bothered to replace it or install a solution or direct oil feed to it, and had it for 17 yrs. No harm in doing it, if it gives you peace of mind, but I never bothered. Drive her in good health!

Low miles, many have gone over 160Kms with no IMS issues; just change oil often

Ims, if it helps you to sleep do with clutch, otherwise keep doing what your doing. Change oil and drive.
Is there much of a $ spread now with a new ims and clutch and a used motor. >3k. Just another way to look at it.

Well, I'll be 79 in a couple weeks (where did the time go?) and drive my 2000 S (6 speed) pretty aggressively about every day from April through October with no intention of giving it up. Keep Boxstering. Keeps us young or at least young at heart. As I type this, I'm deciding where to go for a fun drive later this morning.

Hi Alan, I'm 77 and I don't drive it like I stole it very much but still loving it. My plan is to keep driving until my wife takes the keys away. Best wishes.

I have owned the car for 3 years and covered about 17,000 kms in that time, mostly club social runs and a few interstate trips.

The service records show it has been serviced every 12 months irrespective of very few kms travelled so hoping the engine wont't suddenly detonate before I do.

Good on ya mate! The life expectancy of IMS bearings varies just like people. You should contact LN Engineering about upgrading your IMS down under.

79 is a good age next month. Been a RVer 30+ yrs Mom convinced me to sell. Just bought new to me 2000 Boxster low mileage as replacement. Age is frame of mind. Kids anxious to drive it and have not thought I lost my mind. Got to keep it between the white lines and below the redline.

Seemingly its low mileage example that tend to go.

When i bought my Boxster S 3 years ago for £5100 with 95k miles I was determined not to get it done and just enjoy the car.

My attitude was if it goes it goes Ill just sell it as a breaker... simple

Now im 3 years in and the car owns me, Im going to get it done. There is a Porsche Specialist lady here in the NW of England called Kath Burrows who does a bearing check and replaces the clutch at the same time for £695 all in so its not too bad.

I think it all comes down to how long you plan on keeping the car, how much you like the car and how much it would affect you if the engine wrecked itself as the car would most likely be beyond economical repair.

Porsches should come with a warning:

Achtung! Regardless of model or year owning these cars can become addictive to the point where their welfare becomes a major priority in your life!
